I just don't think we know enough about this project to have an idea of how long it will take, let alone how long it should take. Are they demolishing everything and building from scratch? That'll take longer. How much infrastructure work needs to happen to build a massive boat ride? My guess: Quite a bit! Are they building new restaurants? Will they be able to keep the existing bathrooms or will they need to build more? Every project is different and comes with unique challenges. We'll see how it all plays out.

If only Disney had a fan event where they could detail future plans at the resort, lol

I somewhat understand it but also it sucks to lose so much of DCA land with nothing to replace it

I know the land sucks but monster eats people, Philhare is a wonderful place to take a break in and normally they have a few meet and greet characters that good size lines there

It just sucks if this is going to take 4 years....like use the Disney Forward area. Its to me kinda insane they got the ok to use all this land and they are like first thing use up land with attractions on it....to make something instead?
Disney just seems to take its time with new projects compared to Disney before (I mean look at the year long work on Pixie Hollow) or Mr Lincoln being shut down for 16 months

If you want to believe Disney's words, they expect all of these announced projects sometime by the end of 2029. Not the worst timeline for a beautiful project.

Fair enough on the DK comment

But I mean this ride....I think is a boat ride?

We will see but if its over 3 years its a bit much, Disney for sure has been building things slower now then in the past and universal for sure has been building things quicker

It's a complex ride system that requires a lot of foundation/infrastructure work. Let alone all the work that has to be done elsewhere in the resort to prep for crowds.

I think people are underestimating the complexity of this project. If they keep their word of 2029 target, starting in 2026... it's only a 3 year build. Impressive for a land that is expected to have really good rockwork and an impressive dark ride. The monorail doesn't seem to be moving, so they have to literally build around it.

Didn’t they say Avatar was still in early development so it seems they aren’t very far along in the design process.

Monsters Inc is gonna close February next year. Doubt they’re gonna close it and let it sit there.

I'm just extremely cautious about takes like this. We don't even know if we're getting a proper land with decent vistas like Animal Kingdom. While I don't think James Cameron will allow them to really skimp on the scenic quality, I genuinely still struggle to see how this will all fit together at the end of the day without taking the enclosed Super Mario/Donkey Kong approach at Universal, which I don't think would be as effective for this project.

But, as always, I would love to be wrong about everything...

I think people forget how dry WDI was during the Chapek CEO years. There was very little in development at the time with no master plan in place since nothing was getting approved. There was no indication from corporate leadership that the parks were going to be "turbocharged" at the time. Disney+ was the focus, and the future of Disney. Very little, if anything, was in development.

The D23 parks panel in 2022 was primarily blue sky because there were no commitments. There's a reason why those "beyond thunder" and initial Dinoland concepts were vague... nothing was decided on yet. It wasn't until Iger came back later that year when the parks division got the greenlight to go.

From late 2022 (when Iger returned) to early 2026, a 3 year turnaround time for design & development is not the worst timeline. I wish they could move faster, but it's not the worse we've seen from Disney lol

There's a reason to be cautious with Disney's construction builds... but they do build fast when they want to. Phase 1 of New Fantasyland took 3 years, Star Wars Land took ~3.2 years, Cars Land took 3.6 years. Starting construction in 2026 aligns with a 2029 opening (I can be wrong of course).

Regarding "scope" of the project, if the land sticks between the existing Hollywood area and monorail beam, they have about ~165 feet to play with. When you make that turn into Pandora at DAK where you first see the floating mountains, the distance is about ~200 ft., so they definitely have a lot of room to play with.

Flight of Passage's mountain range façade is roughly 350 ft. from Na'vi to exit ramps, from the old Muppet*Vision theater to Stage 12, you have a little over 310 ft. in space... there's definitely enough room here. You can fit New Orleans Square in this area.

While DCA's might not get floating mountains at the scale of DAK, it might get rockwork/theming all around the perimeter of the land which DAK doesn't.

If I had to guess (and I don’t) I would think Disneyland is probably going to try to get the bulk of their announced projects done by summer 2028 for the Olympics. May not move the needle for attendance as much as Universal Hollywood, but they probably won’t want DCA covered in construction walls for the influx of international tourists.

I would say the new esplanade, Avengers, Coco, and maybe Avatar Phase I will be ready by then. Disney loves their phased openings.

Avengers for sure, but I think Coco is a *tad* optimistic, but it could happen. Avatar for sure will be after the Olympics (Like 2029)

interesting food for though:

Disney testing 'Avatar' water animatronics for California Adventure?

Imagineers are testing new aquatic robotics, which we think might be used for the "Avatar" land coming to Disney California Adventure.

Fresh Baked is Rumoring that the Avengers Ride is behind and that Monsters Inc be closing until closer to May

So I think while Coco and Avengers will be here soon, I think Avatar is still easily over 3 years away

I'm leaning towards 2030 at the latest, but 2029 to cross promote with part 4 is Disney's preferred target. They are leaving Philiarmagic intact for now, and are even repurposing the old Hollywood and Dine building based on the D23 2024 concept art. That cuts down on construction time to focus on the only substantial thing for the land, the boat ride.

Given Disney’s tendency to spend like three times longer on construction than you’d expect, I’m gonna guess 2030-31.

As for what the actual land will be like… from what I can tell, they’re only planning one ride which I think is the best option. The DAK land really should’ve only opened with FOP so they could actually get a real budget and make NRJ the amazing ride it could’ve and should’ve been.

The issue there was that both rides get 1-2 hour lines to this day, and DAK was starting out with zero capacity. They can afford to sink the entire budget into one mega-project here because DCA already has more capacity and is getting two other medium-large expansions around the time of Pandora’s opening.

So, the ride. It’ll probably be the Shanghai Pirates tech. The concept art shows that the land is set in an environment that looks very similar to the Metkayina Cove of the Ancestors, without actually being that location. If I had to guess, this will be an original location inhabited by Metkayina.

They promised the land will also be inspired by Fire and Ash though, so the boat ride will probably take us through their ruined homeland in a classic “brief dark and spooky moment” ala the nightmare scene in Imagination. It would be cool if the Ash people actually attack our boat, but I don’t know if they’re ambitious enough to try something like that.

As far as improving on the formula of the Valley of Mo’ara at DAK. The biggest issue with that land is that the environment is perfect, but it’s completely devoid of Na’vi and there are few animals to be seen. I absolutely agree with concepts mentioned earlier in this thread- there NEEDS to be a meet and greet with both an ikran and tulkun.

It would be cool if every so often, they brought out Toruk instead of just an ordinary banshee. Universal has been doing these elaborate meet and greets for like a decade, and I feel like Disney has kind of fallen behind. They’ve experimented with stuff like this, but it’s time to go all out.

As for the Na’vi… I don’t know how this would work. I don’t know if they’d just have the main characters as meet and greets, or preferably if they could have roaming actors. I really don’t know how they would accomplish this, but they’re literally Disney so I’m sure they could figure out if they wanted to. And I mean, it’s 2026. Are they really gonna build a second Avatar land a decade later without even trying?

They should definitely push the songcords harder. Beyond the shoulder banshees, I feel like that’s the easiest merchandise to sell. I mean, the concept is so perfect. The Na’vi all have personalized songcords with an item to represent significant events in their lives.

You get off the boat ride into the gift shop- there’s a songcord making station with different beads to signify you’ve completed various elements of the land. If they wanna get elaborate, have a CM optionally teach you the song related to each bead.

I don’t know. I think there’s a ridiculous amount of untapped potential left in Avatar for a theme park. DAK Pandora was great, but they can absolutely go harder than that and given the budget this likely has and how important of a project it is, I really hope they take ever possible opportunity and actually try to create a land that competes with Universal’s offerings.

Yeah, I think this could have been before 2030 but...something is slowing Avengers down which seems to be pausing this as well

Because we heard at first this would go down early this year...but doesn't feel like its going anywhere yet

Also I think Disney is playing fast and loose with how much they are going to invest in the land/subland as time goes on. The ride no doubt will be impressive but what they do with the rest of it...we will see

I mean look at how cheap they are getting with food by taking away any unique french fries for the crappy ones......just feels like we are back on some weird budget again and hope they don't make the mistakes of GE and DCA here, if you are doing Avatar area then fully invest in it and don't go cheap
