Keep in mind, Universal doesn't have the patents for the Carousel Domes used in FJ.

You missed my sarcasm.

Regardless, these are different, such that the motion base will likely be stationary in the dome. Not flying in and out like FJ. And the ride vehicle will be fully within he dome, totally covering your vision, which may or may not be a good thing.

I presume this will be a VERY tame ride, with motion similar to FOP

They are taking the most maligned part of FJ, and turning it into a full ride. Odd decision.

It will be praised by a DizNoids everywhere.

That's one heavy duty carousel.

I wouldn't consider it an odd decision. Nothing is wrong with screens when a ride scenario truly dictates it as the best means of immursing a guest in the attraction. Really tough to execute MF in any other way than a simulator type attraction in my opinion.

I’m still of the mind that this will be mini Star Tours motion simulators (with real windows to a view of their own projection dome,) that are mounted on a large turntable that is rotating slowly so one is always at load and unload... And unlike Star Tours, your choices/guidance helps create the adventure on the fly.

If it’s not really interactive (like Mission Space) I will be a lot less excited for it.

If it isn't, that's a lot of money for a Star Tours 2.0.

Technically it's Star Tours 3.0.

I'm interested to see how this turns out, as I'm not a big fan of motion simulator rides. Although I really thought FOP was well done.
I do think it's funny that Disney has started relying more on "SCREENZES!!" and UOR is trying to go in the opposite direction with it's new AAA ride.

Go back far enough and Disney was the one that actually started the screenz craze in the 1980s with the development of the original Star Tours. According to legend, Lucas took Spielberg to see what they were working on and he went to Universal later and asked why they weren't doing anything like that. Several short years later and Back the Future: The Ride was conceived.

Both companies tend to go through phases. I'd say Disney is just now coming out of their projection mapping phase (after adding it in to every ride and show they could think of, culminating with their master opus Runaway Railway,) and then they'll be diving head first back into full-on screenz for a little while (and coasters... and coasters with screenz). Universal probably wants to get back to opening new revolutionary ride systems that blow everyone's mind, cause it felt good when they opened FJ.

I also think financials have a lot to do with the technology used. Universal swung for the fences with FJ because they needed a hit, but then the crisis hit so discretionary spending went soft despite the success of HP, which then became an outlier.

Diagon Alley was amazing because it rode in through butterbeer and wands, but in order to switch to the Comcast rule of one ride a year, they went cheap and with screens because they were cost effective and quick to build. Between the economy is booming in certain spaces, Comcast turned the park into a profitable cash cow, and people got tired of overuse of the tech, they're putting real dollars into to build it up.

I actually think Body Wars came before even Star Tours, but maybe my timeline is off.

Spiderman was a pretty big game changer for Universal. I'd say more so than Potter.

Spider-Man was huge for them, blew everyone's mind, but still didn't bring in the numbers for IOA they were expecting in those first few years (cough cough UNIVERSAL ESCAPE MISTAKE cough cough).

Also, Star Tours first opened at DLR 1987 (soft opened 1986,) Body Wars opened at Epcot 1989.

Yeah, this is about what i'm expecting. Falcon will be obvious lesser ride of the two.

I still can't see it very interactive.

Imagine this, if you will... you wait 30 minutes in FP, after scheduling 69 days ago at 2 am. As you enter the cockpit, a 7 year old takes the pilot seat, and his grandma the gunner seat.

If this ride is signigpficantly affected by the riders, you are going to have an AWFUL experience.

I think there will be a few small segments where there can be some variation. I can't imagine the entire ride is rendered on the fly, but maybe. Sure seems to be a lot of tech to use that 90% of riders won't even notice.

I just can't see more than 10-20% of the ride to be variable. Maybe it'll be a full on choose your own adventure, but there will be tempers flaring if one person can screw up the experience for everyone else.

And Disney has yet to even compare to it. Crazily the Magical Railway may be similar. But without 3D glasses, it will still be lesser.

Battle Escape is being touted as AA heavy, but as still think it will be mostly Stormtroopers, and just a few marquee monsters. Oh, and a Kylo Ren with a glowing animated face :).

Pretty sure Disneyland Star Tours was a game changer, first of its kind.

This bad boy is going to be rendered in real time. Imagineering and Nvidia have discussed that they're using EIGHT top of the line graphics cards working simultaneously to process the activity. It's nearly $40-50k in graphics card power alone.

Disney’s ultra-realistic Millennium Falcon flight simulator will need 8 GPUs to run – TechCrunch

If it was all pre-rendered or had virtual branches that switch to another "track" or sequence, this would be complete overkill. Each one of these cards can by themselves process 4K content but 8 together can do wonders.

This to me makes me think this is going to be the ultimate video game, but like you said, the "game" most likely can get nuked by bad players so it's going to be concerning especially if the park remembers performance. What if I'm stuck as engineer? I can do the best possible but if the pilot decided to dive bomb every wall, does that ruin my experience?

I think I need to recruit a crew...
