Peak is incoming.

For those unfamiliar, a bidding war took place a short while back for what would be Ryan Coogler and MBJs big new original film. Originally said to be a vampyric film, it caught the eye of multiple major studios including Universals I believe.

New trailer for this is out today, but I'd consider it INCREDIBLY spoilery (even though it confirmed a lot of things I suspected).

I think it looks terrific, but if you're at all interested in the movie already, skip the trailer!

Rather than asking in the spec thread(s) for HHN....

Is this a legit vampire and/or horror movie, or is it just an after-thought "surprise reveal" type of situation?

I've been hesitant to make effort to watch it since it's getting award recognition, usually most horror related movies get overlooked and/or snubbed

So it seemed to give off the overhyped artsy type vibes. BUT if it's vampires from start to finish, then yay

Still don’t see how you can make a full-length house out of it.

There’s allegories to serious, real world stuff, but it’s very much a straight vampire movie; vampire rules and all.

Film is a psuedo Jukebox musical that plays into the elements and themes of communities, how assimilation through multiple forms are a present part of people’s lives, in a period piece storyline that has elements that spans multiple ethnicities in one package.

The Vampires are a core and essential part to the assimilation metaphors and themes, but they aren’t until about the 40-45 minute mark of the film. It is however highly worth the watch and is incredibly mainstream (which if you’ve seen the likes of Black Panther or Creed, you’d understand due to the directors style).

Ah okay. Sounds interesting.

I'll give it a watch once confirmed for HHN haha, but also available on streaming.

Sinners is already available for streaming! It’s on HBOMax right now and should be there for a considerable future.

I highly recommend giving it a watch beyond just the HHN context. It’s worth your time.

Yeah Sinners is definitely my favorite movie of 2025. There's a one take, music-driven scene in the middle of the film that might be the best sequence I've seen in theaters in the last five years. A must watch imo!

Sinners is the exact opposite of elevated horror. The first hour plays more like a drama with a couple jumpscares, then the blood flows in the second half. It’s full large scale filmmaking. I’m not convinced it’s winning Picture over One Battle, but its nomination haul is more a reflection of the Academy’s shifting tastes. Sinners and The Substance wouldn’t have gotten nominated even 10 years ago compared to something like Get Out.

I think the fact they make the first half of the film a character-drama more than horror (with the exclusion of one notable moment) really helps in the process of building characters. It helps sell the feeling you are meant to have, especially once the train leaves the station and we go full in on the core location of the film, being as essential as it is for the story as it can get.

I suspect Sinners might actually win Best Picture--but for the reasons not one suspects. Partially due to the more timelessness embodied nature of Sinners, how it presents it's themes and elements; while not having a modern backdrop to justify what happens with X and Y. Think PTA will get the win for director, but with MBJ winning Best Actor at the SAG-AFTRA awards, I think a path is open towards victory for the film in a way that is uniquely situated for it.

It should win "Best *" [sic].

That spin-around shot is unbelievable!

Na. One Battle… is, overall, a better movie. Sinners is great, and easily one of the best of the year. But I definitely don’t think it should win.
