Personally not a fan of the constant revivals of musicals from that period. Atleast they were in it.

There’s a naive earnestness to that era of musical that shows haven’t even bothered trying to recreate over the last 40 years. Granted, tastes change and culture progresses. But when most shows are either overly cynical, overly meta, or overly driven purely by marketability (jukebox/movie adaptations), there’s an “endearingness” in the Rogers/Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Lerner/Lowe type of show.

Add that productions are willing to go a touch outside the box with casting and style (Oklahoma revival), there’s an air of “what’s old is new” to it all.

I dig it. There’s a place for this stuff, and it’s not like it’s filling every theater.

Additional thoughts:
  • Hadestown still incredible and just favorite. Finally got to see Patrick Page as Hades.
  • The gender swapped revival of Company was really good. Fantastic sets and stage direction. Really made it modern.
  • Cursed Child! A really epic show that makes use of the custom changes to the Lyric. Really set up to basically become a show here for over a decade. Book is still a mess but works better when it’s played out. Our Albus was his first time in the part our performance and he was perfect and my new head cannon for Albus.

The Cursed Child is worth it for the spectacle alone. Glad you enjoyed your trip!

So glad to have seen her in the show twice. She couldn't have been any more flawless in that role.

Same, but I get her moving on as she's been involved in various performances of Hadestown since 2016.

Oh absolutely. We're incredibly fortunate that the main 5 stuck around together as long as they have.

I'm curious who is going to play Lydia, but we should find out tomorrow.

I'm going to be in New York for 5 nights from 23rd March. We'd really like to see a show but we are complete beginners when it comes to Broadway.
Do you guys have any recommendations for a couple who like Book of Mormon, Six and Hamilton but not really Les Mis. We liked the sound of Hadestown and Come From Away.
Also, any tips for where and when to get tickets would be greatly appreciated too.

My fandom of Hadestown is well established now, but look at the revival of Company as it leans into the comedy with a great soundtrack.

Definitely backing the Hadestown recommendation. I've seen it twice and will likely see it again (if not on Broadway, when it comes to Orlando in December).

Welp, she’ll be moving across the street into Daniel Craig’s Macbeth.

Could I ask respectfully what the current indoor mask requirements are in the theaters? I love the Music Man and am considering flying up to see the current revival.

Masks required and most theaters don’t have food or drink. They will be revisiting the guidelines in April.

Do they also have food and drink in the theater during a play in the US like they have in the UK?
When we went to London the 2 musicals we saw had people eating hot dog and crap during the show (they bought it during the break). I was shocked and found it devaluated it to watching a movie.

Depends on the location but what I've noticed is they have more snacks and drinks than food food. Most people just buy cocktails or a beer.

I've repeatedly gotten stuck writing long paragraphs about the shows I saw earlier this month, so forget that. Here's some quick thoughts so I can actually write something postable lol.

-Hadestown is really great! Very happy I was able to see the original cast before entropy kicked in. The whole team did great, and I love the way the lean set and cast is contrasted with everyone's pure energy. The soundtrack is killer. The Epic's, Wait for Me I/II, Why We Build The Wall, Lady of the Underground were the highlights for me.

The way my heart sank to the bottom of my chest at the smallest motion of the center platform speaks volumes to how much this story enveloped me. Just wonderful. I can't wait to feel that terrible all over again.

-Phantom of the Opera is a show I had a good time watching, but I don't think I'll ever classify myself as a superfan. Some of the more operatic or romance elements just didn't mesh with me. The best parts for me were the horror, meta, and comedy elements. The spooky vibe the sets create is so wonderfully rich. I love shows that take advantage of the entire theatre, and this show does this multiple times to great effect. It's really a strength of the medium to be able to feel surrounded by a story happening around you and I always welcome it. I'm also a Letters song apologist, deadshot my kind of humor.

-Dear Evan Hansen is a show I enjoyed watching as well, but in this case against better judgement. The plot really is just kind of despicable, and it never really gets resolved in a satisfiying way. It also makes a lot of the really great soundtrack kind of not fully mesh with the story. The soundtrack is incredible and I don't think it's much of a stretch to say it carries the show. Banger on top of banger, Waving Through a Window, Sincerely Me, Requiem, You Will Be Found. This is peak pop-broadway and this is coming from someone who honestly does not enjoy most pop broadway (most of it is just kind of flavorless, no personality). The cast honestly did really great and I felt a lot of real emotion, it just kinda sucks that its hamstringed by a overarching plot like this. Conflicted about it's poor composition, but I enjoyed myself nonetheless.

-Chicago was a surprise pick for me to make up for last minute changed plans. It was a lot of fun! Very vaudeville, and the cast really was putting in the paces here. There were multiple times where I just thought "God, this performer is charismatic as hell". Roxy did a whole number with nothing but her and the band where she adlibs for like 8 minutes and there was not a second where she lost the crowd. Amus is a favorite of mine, but really no one was off their game in my showing. I will say, if the performers had been off their game I'm not sure I'd like it as much. The songs are classic broadway showtunes, but on the whole mostly just fine to me. Just like Hadestown, I liked the lean sets. Shoutout to the conductor who was hamming it up the whole time.

Now to post this without thinking about it too hard, less we scrap another Live Theatre thread post lmao.
