KSF Mini Review Oct 12

Last night was FILLED TO THE BRIM. The security line stretched past the shops and around the corner. If there’s any doubt about people spending money on Haunts, look no further. I checked HHN for comparison, and their lines looked usual. All night, I heard HHN trash talk about how it’s not scary anymore, with many not even bothering to go this year. I have never seen KSF this crowded. Sierra Sidewinder had a line all the way to The Hanging area.

We went to TGI Fridays for drinks/apps, but half my group wanted dinner. We arrived at 5 PM, had to wait for a table until 5:20 PM, got drinks, but half got apps while the others didn’t get their food. By 6:45 PM, we learned our order wasn’t even put in (which made no sense). I thought we should head inside for quicker food, but my friends, being hangry, wanted to wait for their “real food.” Fast forward to 7:45, and we finally got to leave. After waiting in that crazy security line, it was 8:05 PM. One friend accidentally bought a day ticket, so another delay. At 8:30 PM, we finally entered.

ORIGINS
In Line: 8:32 PM | Advertised: 45 mins | In maze: 8:49 PM
It went well and started the night off with a bang. I’ve never had a bad run of this maze, but honestly, it’s time for something new.
B+

Skipped Grimoire; the line was insane. By the way, the line for the bathroom under Room 13 stretched out into the streets. WTF?

ROOM 13
In Line: 8:57 PM | Advertised: 75 mins | In Maze: 9:26 PM
Sadly, this run wasn’t as good as last year. The spots were mostly full, but they weren’t using their triggers. It had some dead areas, but overall it was great, just missing a bit of energy.
B

Skipped Mesmer due to the long line, plus it sucks.

CINEMA SLASHER
In Line: 9:54 PM | Advertised: 135 mins | In Maze: 10:25 PM
I’ve never seen this line so long stretching into the midway games, but I risked it. The main difference here to HHN I think is fewer people had Fast Lane, so the lines never came to a complete standstill. This was my favorite maze last year, but this run was…meh. The energy was lacking, and many monsters were missing. I had fun due to the overall theme but wished for some scene changes. My friends thought it was the best of the night, though.
B-

Stopped for dinner at 9 PM, but the lines for food were slammed -- like uncontrollably insane. I found a taqueria with a decent line. Their birria was terrible but edible.

CHILLING CHAMBERS
In Line: 11:18 PM | Advertised: 60 mins | In Maze: 11:37 PM
This was the first maze that truly felt “on.” It was full of talent and rocked all the way through. This maze was my least favorite of the new ones last year but easily the best this time.
A-

Nobody wanted to see The Hanging at midnight, sadly. Onward.

WAX WORKS
In Line: 11:54 PM | Advertised: 15 mins | In Maze: 12 AM
I’ve never liked this maze, but this time it got me a few times, even as I walked in - some guy poked their head OUT of the facade to get us. I was glad it didn’t suck for once.
B-

EIGHT FINGERS NINE: THE BOOGEYMAN
In Line: 12:06 AM | Advertised: 45 mins | In Maze: 12:17 AM
I LOVED THIS ONE. The imagery was creepy and the idea unsettling. It felt like a nightmare in a good way. I thought I was next to a tree but it was a person in stilts - one of the best scares of the night. The hair monsters give me that Grudge itch, and the sleep paralysis theme was conveyed well. I loved the lair seeing people sleep. I’m not sure if this will be one of KSF's greats since most reviews lean to Widows, but I thought it was the best maze of the night.
A

WIDOWS
In Line: 12:26 AM | Advertised: 45 mins | In Maze: 12:48 AM
Thematically, I didn’t understand this one—it seemed like a weird mix. The first half felt like all vibes and no scares, just grannies waving. Once the spiders came in, things picked up, but by then, the momentum was off. I liked it, but nothing stood out.
A-

Skipped Bloodline; total waste last year.

GRIMOIRE
Walked on at 1:20 AM. Nobody in front or behind us. My group made me go first -- an insanely personalized experience. The monsters were going INSANE. We got every intended scare for nearly every room and plenty of double scares. There were a few sections empty, but others were full of talent. Even in empty areas, unsettling performances happened off to the side - like a kid reading the book just twitching out. One scene, the monsters ganged up on me and wouldn't let me through; it was INTENSE. This was a top 5 KSF experience.
A+

CALICO CANDY MOUNTAIN
In Line: 1:30 AM | On Ride: 1:45 AM
This is still one of my favorites, but it was ruined by the SCREECHING wheels, making it less relaxing.

LOG RIDE
In Line: 2 AM—last people on.
Water was high, sloshing into the boat at several points. We got wet more at normal parts than at the drops. The Halloween Hootenanny is still a great addition!

SCAREZONES
As always, these were amazing. Ghost Town needs no explanation—A+. Goreing 20s keeps improving, but next year they should add more; A-. CarnEvil, not my usual favorite, was flooded with talent, so A-. The Gauntlet got me several times when it was a dud last year, gotta love the sliders; A-. I didn’t see Forsaken Lake. I wish they’d liven up Fiesta Village, but other than that, it felt like nowhere to hide.

OVERALL
I missed The Hanging and two mazes, but overall, it was a huge success for getting in at 8:30 PM on what seemed like the most crowded night I’ve ever experienced. I’ve waited in those lines much longer; I remember waiting 45-70 minutes for some mazes on less crowded nights. While the park was crowded, there seemed to be less Fright Lane this time. All things considered, it was a smooth experience, which could’ve been a disaster. Stick it out after midnight; the crowd thins quickly.

Now, is it better than HHN this year? Simple answer: yes. More complex: I think HHN on a good year would’ve beaten KSF this year, but HHN is just THAT mediocre, making KSF look good. KSF had its best year last year and beat HHN fair and square. This year, Eight Fingers Nine and Widows aren’t runaway classics, but KSF is the better value overall in 2024.

I’m proud of Knotts. Their quality has improved over two years, and they smoothed out operations for the mazes at least. I didn’t see any lazy or unprofessional monsters. I didn’t run into completely empty mazes. Everything went great, considering the crowd. Even their old mazes were rocking. I didn’t encounter any maze I’d give a C+ or lower, which is unusual; even last year which was my fav!

Final Grade: B+

P.S. Knotts, you’ve earned my respect. I’ll be returning yearly instead of every other year like I did 2012-2022. This might be the first year I don’t return to HHN for a second time since 2010—should I go to KSF again in November? Only time will tell, but I’m glad to be back “full time” at KSF, my home and first love that got me into haunts!
Glad to see more people on here are noticing Knott's improvements! Obviously, the event isn't perfect, but now people can see why I've had a better time there than at HHN!

I did enjoy HHN this year despite this year not being the strongest, but a big part of that was because of the fluke of low waits this year.

I got to watch some of The Hanging on Youtube. Made it about 10 mins before I decided I would just skim through the rest. The very first bit with the TikToker was HILARIOUS and tricked me into thinking it'd be a good time. The rest was a bunch of inside, industry, meta jokes that probably 1% of the audience would understand (granted, the TikToker joke was too). Why they would build the show entirely on the merger is beyond me. Barely any pop culture jokes and when there was, it wasn't necessarily a lampoon of them, it was just.....doing the same thing over again. Instead of finding a clever way to get the Madame Web line from the movie into the show, they literally just say "this is the line from Madame Web." When Justin Timberlake says "this is going to ruin the tour," they simply go beat by beat with the actual quote. "What tour?" "The WORLD tour!" AHAHAHAHA HILARIOU -- no. It was so great last year, sad to see it's back to its garbage ways. Also, it was insanely misogynistic. I can't say 100% it was written by a man, but if it was written by a woman who thought they were being funny, well.......they failed. I'm glad I didn't subject my friends to this, they would've been pissed for how bad it was lol, ESPECIALLY because it is INSANELY long. Literally WHY can't they just cut this thing down to 25 minutes at most? It goes on 20 minutes longer than that?! 45 minutes?! Are you insane?! It's a stupid comedy, stunt show! Let these people get on with their night! Then you can even add in an extra showtime! ugh.

I also want to note the KSF app is garbage. It didn't even open pass the initial loading screen and there was zero service on all our phones ALL night so we could barely text each other. Just terrible.

Ditto on the KSF app and the in park wifi. If youre gonna get rid of park maps, how the hell are you gonna make these incredibly hard to access.

The regular park app is crap too. It tells me I need to "update" it, but there is literally no update. Knotts wants to be modern without making any effort

I want to say a big thank you to @downunder, @SixBillium, and @Clive for their advice for attending Scary Farm. We had a 5:30 reservation on Sept 27th for the Boo-fet and had plenty of time to eat, do a bathroom break, grab out sweatshirts from our locker and line up for early entry. We were able to knock out the early entry houses fairly quick. We finished the rest of the houses by 9pm. By then, the teens had decended upon the park. We strolled through the zones for a little and tried to find the pickle shot (sadly, the stand was closed) and headed out a little after 10pm. We had been in the park since 11am so we were exhausted since we had done HHN the night before. We did not do any rides or shows. We actually were quite lucky during the day. The park was almost completely empty. I think our longest wait was 20 minutes for the Calico Mine Ride.

We actually really liked Scary Farm and the interaction with the scareactors. It was just more fun than HHN which seems so scripted. I finally got to see someone cowering on their knees in a house. Unbeknownst to me, my adult nephew has a fear of spiders. In Widows, one of the scareactors offered him a spider to hold. He dropped with his hands over his head. Best moment of the night. (he was fine shortly after we left the house)

Glad everything worked out and that you had a great time!

This past Sunday (the 13th) was definitely busier than my initial visit on Sunday the 29th, but crowds were still extremely manageable. They were definitely turning away unsupervised teens en masse at first, but many seemed to find their way into the park by 9PM or so. (Do they eventually give up on staffing the entry portals that are supposed to weed these folks out?)

Our group didn't have the Boofet but was in the front third for rope drop. I'd never seen the opening scaremony, which goes on a little long but is nonetheless a fun start to the evening. We followed this itinerary based on my observations from the 29th:

--Origins
--Grimoire
--Room 13
--Mesmer
--Cinema Slasher
--Chilling Chambers
--Dinner Break
--Widows
--Eight Fingers Nine
--Bloodline
--Waxworks

We did not wait more than five minutes for any of these mazes. Ride lines looked long, so we only hopped on the log ride a little after 10 -- about a 5-10 minute wait. The rest of my group headed home a bit after 11, and I was able to comfortably do every maze again except Chilling Chambers plus Jaguar before park close. The streets in general felt busier throughout the night, but again, nothing hellish.

Could use some advice. I'm doing a California trip next week and I'm going to Knotts Scary Farm on Friday, problem is that it'll be the tail end of my trip and I don't have a hotel or airbnb booked for that day because I'm going straight to the airport after knotts. So I'll have my luggage and carry on with me. Lol. Before booking the ticket I honestly forgot about the bag policy so I'm at a loss for what I should do. I also won't have a car I'll be using public transport and ubers to get around. Any advice is appreciated

I believe there are lockers located in the knotts marketplace, or even call up the knotts hotel. Can’t promise they’ll accommodate you but their guest services are very helpful for this kind of scenario.

I went Friday night and omg... Probably my favorite visit I've ever had to KSF. It was such a great night. I got all the houses done in under 3 hours and did multiple houses 2-3 times. Weather was perfect and the houses were also fairly staffed. I'm still shocked how great the wait times were considering it was a Friday in October right before Halloween! Got really lucky I guess.

KSF 2024 house ranking (I love all the houses though, it was hard ranking them all tbh. None of them for me isn't rated below an 8/10!)

1. Cinema Slasher
2. Mesmer
3. Widows
4. The Grimoire
5. Wax Works
6. Eight Fingers Nine: The Boogeyman
7. Origins: The Curse of Calico
8. The Chilling Chambers
9. Room 13
10. Bloodline 1842

I finally went to KSF yesterday, and I must say this was my smoothest trip to the event. I entered at 7 pm and finished all 10 mazes by 9 pm. I did four mazes twice before leaving at 10 pm. Here is my list on how I went in order.

Origins: The Curse of Calico
The Grimoire
Room 13
Mesmer
Cinema Slasher
The Chilling Chambers
Bloodline 1842
Widows
Eight Fingers Nine: The Boogeyman
Wax Works

Best maze is Widows. I HATE spiders so that actuslly creeped me out. I went twice too. I hate the queues for Origins and Grimoire, but thankfully, the lines were short this time. Mesmer is always good and I enjoyed Chilling Chambers and Cinema Slasher. I wish Bloodline kept the guns. There are some scare actors missing in that maze. Ironically, Wax Works was the last maze I entered that is available for the last time.

Overall, I had a wonderful time and I slightly edge this haunt event as #1 this year.

Also went yesterday and had a great time, ngl, Ghostrider night ride was once again the highlight/ start of the night. (the Mad dash was INSANE, 90 mins in the first 10mins) and man... this and Twisted Colossus both battling for first place in my coaster rankings.

The Mazes were great too albeit staffed fine, with how they seem to be designed, it seems like they create hundreds of boo holes and just let the actors pick where ever they want to be, (a fully staffed house could probably have 50+ spots) its cool but they should at least staff the "showstopper scenes" since then you'll know something is missing. Anyways Rankings:

1. Widows and Eight Fingers Nine: The BoogeyMan
Both 2 new ones steal the show, Walked into Widows and the first room blows HHN away Scenically out of the water! Boogeyman also had great sets with the small towns and forest scenes it creates. Very scenic, very dark, too dark sometimes, could of been lighten better to show off some of the details or create more boo spots of actors.
Widows had a lot of good characters and fun spider actors. The first half is really strong in the Nursing home, the second half more so is just hallways of rocks and spider mesh but that finale is great. And someone in creative saw Chucky last year and wanted to top that, I don't think it did but it was still fun.
Nine Fingers Eight was really good, I thought I would not have been able to get the story but I'm glad it wasn't too direct but gave you enough to think about. The cat scare is hilarious, I loved the small town sets and the aesthetic of the house was great. Loved the vibe and far more eriee tone then what the rest of the houses do or try to do. One complain tho is the lack of Mr. Ate Fingers Nein. Shows up at the start, his one animatronics near the middle and finale scare also really goofy mask, nothing like the art)
Can't really say which I like more but both where this year's Highlights
Also the only ones I did 3 re-runs since they were just that good)

3. Chilling Chambers
The Keeper being gone wasn't really an issue for me, they still reference him in audio and its more made up with the little tweaks they've given the maze. Giving the first half a roof, new. audio for rooms, staff just as good as last year, and again all the nods to previous houses, this is an anniversary house for the ages!

4. Cinema Slasher
Compared to last year were I wasn't a huge fan of it, this year however was a REALLY great run, turns out not having 2 consistently screaming girls behind you does make for a better experiences. This is pretty much what I would of wanted from a Blumhouse of Horrors to use the Theatre setting, transition from movie screens, book open and end with, and each section was really well done. I think it does die down once you enter Slaughterhouse but who doesn't love a gaint chainsaw. And the transition characters with Not Bendy and the Ink Machine Camera Guy and Popcorn mascot with a knife were highlights, I loved em XD.

5. Mesmer: Circus of the Mind
One that is mind boggling, literally, everytime I've done this maze, its been firing on all cylinders with the effects, character interactions and "minimalist design?" Not grand or insanely detailed but it works for a more experimental maze with trippy visual. The audio is also a heavily highlight I think a lot overlook, akin to Muerte as you narrator thru the house with more follow through out the maze. Great One everytime only fallen in rankings because newer houses have overtaken it

6. Origins: Curse of Calico
I get the hype for this house, still not a SUPER fan for it but it has its moment, this is where I started to realize how many boo hole a single house can have an when they aren't filled you'll notice em, but there was also a surprising number of ones I didn't expect and thas what make it super fun. I think its the sets leading themselves to a great number of scares, got a few but also the integral ones like the Green Witch and Courtroom scenes were missing and that's where I think they should of prioritized staffing.

7. Room 13
I was planning on skipping this one since I had no desire to do it but wait was low and was pleasantly surprised. I liked the low ceiling as it helps it feel like you are going thru the bowels of a Hotel, it works in this location (expect that one high rise effect, either clean the floor or get less foggy panels). This is the maze tho that kinda shows Knott's weak spot with scare and how they could heavily benefit from some trigger scares, like it does feel like an HHN house just without the effects and triggers), a lot of rooms if they had a trigger scare would of help (the closet, elevator room, bathroom section, Tavern jumpscares etc.) If they found a balance with trigger and roam around scares Knotts would be on top 100% of the time!

8. Wax Works
Gonna miss this one, but unfortunately its time, my least favorite run of it since I did it back 2 years ago. I still had a good run and like Depths last year probably my scariest run of the night, but its showing its age so its time. Great house, super gory, fun manequinn scares, and the tune of Crooked Man plays thru to and the facade! Also I forgot how BRUTAL that Air canon scare was, felt like a punch to the arm GODAM. But I'm cool with Wax Works going, its left a well legacy at the farm and just before it would of been truly falling apart.

9. Bloodlines 1842
Glad its going, wtf. Both Bloodlines in last place this year is insane. Where as Hollywood's Bloodline is Small jack@%^# rooms with action going on (if you can catch it), 1842 has grand sets with almost nothing going on in em. The only room populated was the finale after 5 mins of just walking thru a poorly lit museum. Cool build up music but thas all it is, build up. Better than last years run were it literally was empty but glad it's going out, on a whimper unfortantely.

I did not do Grimoire, I had no desire to do it but it'd probably still be better than Bloodlines :skull:

Scarezones are good but one thing I LOVED and noticed even more know is Lighting! Something that gets slept on through the whole park.

Great night yesterday, operations were smooth (minus rides), and the waits were chill (minus rides) no more than 20 mins. Loved the atmosphere, classic Halloween Vibe.
Great year and pretty much an improvement from last year, was a solo night so maybe would of been better with the homies but it was nice.
Definitely, better scenically than HHN, but scares still left a bit to be desired (mainly a game of peek-a-boo and would surprise the actors more often than not lol).

Last year this maze had some trigger scares, I remember them very well. This year, I didn't see a single one. Maybe they were all broken. I was watching a scareactor using their trigger in some maze somewhere (maybe even a scarezone? I can't say for sure) and their triggers look more rudimentary than HHN's. My guess is they break easy, nobody cares to fix it, and they get to go scare someone else.

I think this is probably generally right, though I did see one trigger go off early on in Room 13 on both my visits. Some performers may just prefer not to use them.

I was watching a scareactor using their trigger in some maze somewhere (maybe even a scarezone? I can't say for sure) and their triggers look more rudimentary than HHN's. My guess is they break easy, nobody cares to fix it, and they get to go scare someone else.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say broken, there were several that were installed last year and were intended to be ready by the 2nd or 3rd week of the event but were never turned on, I imagine there must be some kind of limitation that comes with that specific location and how they wire up triggers.
The funny thing is last year the cast were heavily encouraged to use the triggers whenever possible as they're kinda the only thing providing any non-visual story aside from the radio chatter, would be weird if between years they just gave up on that when its still kinda in its infancy.
It's possible it was a budgetary issue though, as I remember from last year there were a handful of props and setpieces visibly broken in Room 13 that are fixed this year, so maybe somehow once all the maintenence costs rolled out they just didn't have the money to fix the triggers.

Finally making it to Scary Farm tomorrow. Is the Freak Plan(TM) still the way to go? Priority will obviously be the two new mazes, so I assume heading behind Ghostrider at rope drop is the move.

My advice would be to do the houses in this order: Eight Fingers Nine > Widows > Wax Works > Bloodline > Origins > Grimoire > Room 13 > Cinema Slasher > Mesmer > Chilling Chambers. That's how I did it last Friday and got all the houses done in under 3 hours.
