They kept saying if they kept everything it was going to be a 4+ hour movie for months so I don't know why anyone is surprised the first half is this long. They told us this since they said they planned to release in two parts.

I think its great news....this will allow more room for us to really understand the growth between Galinda and Elphaba. Also more backstory regarding Boq, Nessarose, and Elphaba since Elphaba knew Boq as a child.

I feel like that would be the least offensive approach to this "adaptation".

Nearly 3hrs is a bit excessive for a "part 1" no matter how much book material is added in. The glimpse of childhood flashbacks already makes me groan.

It *shouldn’t* be flashbacks, if it’s true to the book. And it likely won’t be, since we see Elphaba’s birth in the musical’s opening. In the book, it’s all linear.

A good bit of pretty psychologically messed up stuff happens to Elphaba as a kid (including learning about how she reacts to water), which deeply informs a lot of her actions after Shiz. Most of her story after her rebellion is significantly abridged in the musical. If they’re expanding that side of her story (which they’d want to, so they can maximize Jeff Goldblum), they should expand her childhood. Aspects like the Green Elixer, which don’t get real focus on stage, will make for a more interesting film.

I suspect part 2 is 90 mins or 2 hours, the second act is way shorter. Add in book into, this makes sense to me.

Well now I am confused on how the film could be almost 3 hours without new songs....because event 3 new numbers would add 10 mins to the film along let alone dialogue around new song

I mean the first act of Wicked is about 1hr 45 minutes or so. Adding 45 minutes is a lot, but extend songs like Dear Old Shiz, Something Bad, Sentimental Man, and more plot, I can see them making it as long as it is.

Early screening was last night.....with no embargo. Seems so far everyone who saw it really really really liked it. Mind you its early reactions which tend to lead overly positive.

Not saying it will be bad but normally the first people to see it are fans or critic's studios know should enjoy what they are showing

film festivals are different haha...everything gets a standing ovation.

The truth is there were huge Oz fans invited so they are probably going to be the toughest critics since they love the IP a lot

....or do a 2nd LA trip & see it in a BIG historic theatre (aka Chinese Theatre) where it seats over 900 people & the imax is massive. Plus you can snag a photo of Judy Garland's footprint in the forecourt.
