It was hard for me to imagine that it even could be as enclosed as some had hoped, just from the perspectives of logistics, maintenance, and environmental/HHS.

I mean, an incredible amount of water will be constantly flowing outside and inside facility. Add in Florida heat, humidity, and the fact that guests will be in continual, physical contact with this water (stairs, walls, platforms, rides): lots of airflow and a little sunlight isn't a bad thing. With the Volcano home to such a significant amount of the Park's capacity, any environmental or structural/logistical access related shutdown of any duration would just about shut down the whole Park capacity-wise.

Just look at the issues water rides such as Splash Mtn. have had in the past. Gotta minimize those risks...

Thats a good point. If that thing was enclosed, all of those people on the stairs would be in a massive sauna. Could have gotten dangerous.

I'm the most worried about that platform they suspended for the staircase landing. If they fix that, the whole thing will look a lot better.

The question is - how?

Absolutely not. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Said it before On here. If we call six flags and cedar park amusement parks and Disney world and universal theme parks- then why should we call hurricane harbor, regional water parks, typhoon lagoon and volcano bay the same name? Just as theme parks have distinction from amusement parks, water theme parks should have distinction from generic water parks. It's not universals fault that Disney never promoted them as such domestically. Now universal has taken the correct step. Unless we think hurricane harbor or splash country is in the same class as typhoon lagoon/volcano bay.

For me, the exposed purple supports and the exposed stairs completely ruin the illusion. Don't get me wrong, the front side of the volcano is stunning, but to not give the same level of attention to the rear is, in your words, perplexing.

Truthfully, I think a lot of the "blown out" look is negligible once your in the park. Might it be distracting like hog warts building from angles, maybe. But I think the entrance is going to be mind blowing (the pretty side)- and once your on the back your more focused on rides anyway. I think it's perfectly done and once in the park, no one will notice or care- in fact- showing off the rides is likely the smarter approach on that side.

What I'm saying is judge it when you're there, not from aerials, ya know?

So close!

I drive by Wet N Wild every day and seeing everything being torn down just sucks. Part of me holds out a tiny bit of hope that they decide to leave the Black Hole and just use it as part of the future hotel pool area. It was such a great ride!

Does anyone else find the whole "Water Theme Park" thing really annoying especially now that it's almost complete and we can see how bad the back side of the Volcano looks with that gigantic opening revealing all the supports and such?
That plus clearly there are no show scenes inside the volcano? So what makes this a "theme park"? The fact that they built a volcano in the middle of it?
Ok... but so what does that make Blizzard Beach and Typhoon Lagoon? Those disney water parks have just as much if not more theming and they still acknowledge the fact that it's a water park. They even have an AA on the new slide at the disney park. Something Volcano Bay doesn't seem to have.

To me, not one bit. It has a 'theme' and is a water park. Overall is it going to take away from the experience and visuals being called a water theme park, I get that it will increase some people expectations though but just enjoy it for what it is, a very attractive water park. As mentioned previously, Disney and other water parks are marketed in the UK as being water theme parks too. Every morning, I am checking with hope that they have tested the night time eruption (Universal is very good at keeping people in suspense) as think this is what will make it stand out further and any another dimension, as im more looking forward to the evening/later hours in VB, relaxing after a long day at the parks and just taking it all in.

We have a thread specifically for the whole
"Water Theme Park" debate. We talked about it for like a hundred pages on here. The ship has sailed. They're calling it a water theme park weather you agree with it or not. And the back of the Volcano is open. Is it a "Water Theme Park"?!? | Inside Universal Forums
NEXT TOPIC.

If you look at the 2 minute mark in this video it appears the fearless river has a mini wave generator built into the side of the trough. It's across from the entrance to the river.

...anyways.

Looks like they're testing out the action river in that video. There's a wave pump at the beginning of the river and then another one inside the volcano. Looks like both single and double tubes are welcome.

I'm studying for my drone pilot license; this is in such a grey area right now it's probably going to take a supreme court case to iron out the legality. First there's the issue of private landowner's domain, which has already been decided in the Supreme court as everything ground level up to at least 365 feet above the ground. Drone's are only legally able to fly below 500 ft, which allows 145ft of vertical air space this drone will be allowed to fly, except over the tallest structure in an urban area, where the drone is allowed to fly 360 ft above the tallest point.

Seeing that the pilot can ensure that he is flying at the correct altitudes, he also has to make sure there is no-one below his flight path that isn't directly involved, or made aware of the flight. Clearly, he didn't do this. The next part is Orlando requires drone pilots to know acquire permits under certain conditions:

According to the new ordinance passed by city officials on Monday, drone use is now restricted within 500 feet of city-owned parks, schools and venues, such as the Amway Center, Camping World Stadium and Harry P. Leu Gardens. Drones are also restricted within 500 feet of gatherings with more than 1,000 people.

A permit is required to fly a drone in these areas, which cost $20 per flight or $150 annually.

Rules he may have broken here are being within 500ft of that school/the theme parks population (although that may be more than 500ft).

The problem with this Orlando ordinance is the United States Government has exclusive sovereignty of all airspace in the United States. This means that federal law in regards to air space will always trump local ordinances. Therefore, since none of these local rules are federal law, they aren't enforceable in a Federal court. Basically, a pilot could get fined by the city of Orlando for breaking their ordinance, but all the pilot has to do is go to a federal court, pay all court fees to challenge the city of Orlando and the fine will be dropped. Problem is it just gets more expensive to fight the fine than pay it.

Personally, I wouldn't want to risk losing my drone pilot license so I would just stay away unless I acquired a permit from the City of Orlando.

I think a lot of the drone ordinances only apply to commercial craft over 50 lbs. So there is a lot of grey area. Could also have an annual permit to fly. Orlando approves new rules for drones - Orlando Sentinel

The restrictions I mentioned are for Part 107 of the FAA regulations for SUAS, or Small Unmanned Aircraft System; anything between 0.55lbs and 55lbs. Pretty much every commercial drone is less than 55lbs. Anything heavier than 55lbs are usually the ones you never want to see (or they'll be the last thing you see hehe)
