‘How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Sequel in the Works with Jim Carrey, Ron Howard (Exclusive)

Universal and Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer are in development on the sequel to the 2000 film.
www.hollywoodreporter.com www.hollywoodreporter.com

Universal Pictures and Ron Howard are officially back on a new movie together--and it's a sequel to How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Jim Carrey is in talks to reprise the role. Alec Berg, Jeff Schaffer and David Mandel are all onboard with a script written (the three previously worked with Universal on The Cat in The Hat with Mike Myers).

Very disinterested in corporate Grinchmas culture at this point. Seeing it in nearly half of the Walmart, Mcdonalds, etc ads, or filling up sizable parts of every Christmas display in any store over the past few years has built up a sour taste in my mouth.

The IP has been over-capitalized on, which is the exact opposite of the point of the story.

I wonder if they would even be able to recreate the distinctly 90s / 2000s-y grim-goofy aesthetic of the first one, and I have to imagine they're putting up some big dollars to get Jim to consider going through literal torture again post-retirement.

Agreed. How The Grinch Stole Christmas is one of my favorite Christmas stories, but the over-commercialization is baffling given it's message. And not gonna lie, The Grinch becoming such a massive Christmas icon has probably robbed us of ever seeing modern adaptations of other Grinch books/animated specials like Halloween Is Grinch Night.

I love this movie, and I love Jim Carrey, and I don't want this at all.

There is just no interesting story to tell with a reformed Grinch character. It would be like trying to do a CHRISTMAS CAROL sequel with good-hearted Scrooge.

The only way they could *probably* make this work is if they remake "Grinch Day", which was the Grinch Halloween special. We all know 100% they're not gonna do that.

Hard. Pass. Talk about reaching at the bottom of the barrel.

I think you can do this well. Maybe make Cindy-Lou Who a Mom with a cynical kid who has to learn the meaning of Christmas from the Grinch instead of the other way around.

I am also Gen Z, so my opinions don't matter because my brain is corrupted by nostalgia.

Technology has improved over the preceding years, so either it's a less intensive process, or his face is 100% CGI.
