Maybe I'm a fake fan for saying this, but I really don't think Phantom or Hunchback are big enough draws for a monster house, either of them would have to be paired with one of the more popular monsters, be it Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, Mummy, or even Creature.

I don’t think that’s a very big concern for Universal

Maybe that’s exactly what we are are getting and Murdy is saying that to throw us off track lol:grin::grin:

That said, I don't think it's impossible that the coasts could diverge in their choices of pairing. Could be a situation where Orlando's getting Drac and Phantom for a wider appeal, and Hollywood is getting Phantom and Quasi.
Could just as easily be a miscommunication in rumors, or trying to muddy the waters on Murdy's part, but given how different each coast's monsters mazes have been even when they share a title, I don't think its necessarily unreasonable for them to diverge like that.

TBF that almost happened last year with Hollywood doing Drac and Mummy and Orlando doing Mummy and Wolfman but they decided to integrate. I think the same marketing pressures will apply here.

Phantom/Hunchback has always made sense of me due to the 100th. Also matches as Murdy had to read elements from the 1800s (Hunchback *was* published in the 1830s). If anything I'm curious how Marketing handles the 100th in general.

I think it was less a marketing thing, and more they realized that they had some degree of synergy available and they combined the ideas early in development, especially since outside of naming, and the inclusion of the 3rd party in either house, they really didn't end up shifting from the original plan when you actually look at who's represented most in each house.
Not to mention 2019 had no issue switching out certain characters in merch and marketing to represent Universal Monsters and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man separately, so I think it was really more of a convenient creative avenue rather than something done exclusively for exterior pressure.

But how many people would be drawn in specifically by a Hunchback haunted house? Most people now are probably most familiar with the Disney version unfortunately.

Couldn’t the same be said as a concern with nearly every original? I wasn’t familiar with slaughter sinema, winter’s wharf or whatever, etc. I’m not really familiar with ANY original before I go through it, but they usually rock anyway.

I would love a weird hunchback, phantom, or black lagoon house, and I’m not familiar with any of them except phantom, and only the musical.

It may have been sarcasm, but I remember Legacy saying they added in Dracula to Orlando’s house because the costume department double ordered black cloaks. So maybe that’s why Murdy is pushing back on it for Hollywood because they didn’t make the mistake of double ordering cloaks. Again, If it was sarcasm I am gonna sound like an idiot lol

I guess you have a point, but those houses don’t have the “Universal Monsters” name attached. Phantom is definitely one of the less popular monsters on the lineup you often see on merch, and I don’t think I ever see Hunchback on anything.

I do agree a Creature house has a lot of potential, his design is so radically different than the other monsters that it definitely would be intriguing as a house.

What if the Universal Monsters house isn't a VS house, but a house similar to Hollywood's 2018 and Orlando's 2019 Universal Monsters houses? Basically, the Monsters get a section of the house dedicated to them. Phantom, Dracula, Hunchback, and Creature would be a pretty good line-up of Monsters for that. Could expand upon it by having two Monsters being the main focus (Phantom and Dracula/Hunchback) where each Monster gets half of the house dedicated to them.

Might be way off, but I think it would be interesting to see. I think both coasts having a different Monster going up against Phantom is a pretty good theory though.

I wonder if Orlando has more optimism to do crossover monster houses than hollywood possibly does currently because the land at Epic is like the ultimate crossover and crossover houses play into that.

Phantom does not appear in as much in merchandise because the Lon Chaney estate still owns the right to Chaney's likeness, including characters like the Phantom. The underlying film is also in the public domain and is partially lost, meaning they have less incentive to promote it (especially given the expense of paying the Chaney estate). These impediments would not exist with a haunted house adaptation.

Couldn't they use the Claude Rains version....which they include in the boxset for monsters?

They could, and in the case of film releases, they do. The Claude Rains Phantom has also appeared on some merch. But Universal is well aware that no one is clamoring for that iteration of the character.

I may be misremembering, but weren't the Classic Monster designs "original" designs made specifically for the (Hollywood) event back in 2018? Perhaps they could make an original design to skirt around the likeness issues. I'd love to see a new take on him.

(Also, I haven't used the forums in a good year or two, so it's good to be back!)

I dont think it's ever been confirmed, but it does seem like the orlando looks were based on the 2018 Hollywood concept art, so I don't think there would be any real likeness issues if there haven't been on either coast already.
For reference, this is what phantom looked like both in the concept art vs the Orlando 2019 house.

Looking back at the spec map with the guitar and lighting bolt, Mark posted a video of David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” on Discord whose imagery was iconic for his lighting bolt face paint, was also a guitarist other than a singer-songwriter, and even had multiple space projects. Almost sounds like an original concept inspired by the Ziggy Stardust album, but it‘s starting to sound like he was making a reference to the Dead Space games.

If it were to happen this year, then not only It would technically mean two video game IP’s, but also a backup to the Alien franchise.
