Ahh spec season is upon us, love it!

I suppose the only speculation in our home is if international travel will resume in time for us coming over the pond to join the fun...

For now I'll just enjoy reading about HHN on here, especially intrigued to see what they do to replace Billie Eilish

I hope they do a park-wide Billie Eilish scare zone just to see the complaints.

I'd like to see an Ellish scare zone, I think it'd be cool.

Walking Dead got a park-wide scarezone so they're certainly not above giving a passing fad a whole park zone

Neither Eilish nor WD qualify as a "passing fad."

Walking Dead is pretty much out of style at this point

As far as Eilish goes, it's not a hugely wild suggestion that the creepy imagery has a short shelf life

I don't doubt she will be around as an artist for a long time, but in current form, not so much

At the time, TWD was a hot property, though

Sometimes it is hard to tell what is going to be a passing fad

Also, I am not sure where to put this question, but why doesn’t Sprung 2 enter through the front anymore a d only ever utilize that side entrance?

Walking Dead is gone now, but for about 8-10 years it was a cultural touchstone. It was one of the biggest horror properties of the late oughts early 10s. It may be overplayed to Horror Nights fans in 2021, but there is absolutely a reason why it was around as long it was. Calling it a passing fad is not giving it its' due respect.

Billie is also not a passing fad, but for other reasons than Walking Dead. One of the biggest names in music right now and there was definitely a natural progression in pop music to bring us from the likes of Lorde to Halsey to Billie. Not a one-hit wonder or fluke indie star either. Her full horror inspired phase might be ending, but she has made some dark alternative music before "when we fall asleep" and I doubt she's going full bubblegum pop after this either.

I think I said this last year when Billie was first being talked about, but I've found that generally the only stuff that gets this much vitriol in popular culture is stuff that appeals to girls, mostly teenage girls. Bieber, 90s Boy bands, KPop, Twilight, Titanic. None are as bad as people said they were at the time. I feel like if it was a Slipknot or Korn or Iron Maiden house it would've been a whole different story, we got a Rob Zombie house AND zone last year and no one said anything. I'm not saying it's a conscious decision from anyone, but it's just weird for this house to get this harsh of a reception.

I mean, I've said before I like her imagery and the house looked like it had some interesting ideas

I'm not a huge fan of music-based houses as I don't think they work

I think the time to do it was 2020, height of her popularity with her current dark tone

Perhaps fad is a strong word, but maybe "current popularity height" is a better term.

I know she's a female artist in an event that has had largely male artists represented in music-based houses, that's not lost on me

It doesn't mean it's taboo to critique, or talk about, or question the potential popularity of for 2021 and beyond

I think the time has come and gone for her to be represented at Horror Nights

As far as the original post, it was mostly a jab at the all-park WD scare zone which I will always make fun of

Also, if they do a Slipknot or Korn house I'm never going to HHN again

YOu described this perfectly. A lot of my friends only started going to HHN because of The Walking Dead. Hell, I was in high school when it was at its peak and I don't know a single person who wasn't talking about each episode. It was massive and the opportunity to walkthrough that world was game changing (It was also game changing for HHN)

Billie would have been just as big for HHN but instead of bringing in the tv show demographic you would have brought in a music demographic and who knows how that would have turned out! We always hear about the hate for the house because its easy to hate a house about a 17-year-old girls pop music. Sometimes a little research is needed before you can decide not to like something. Rather we liked it or not I'm sure the majority of the country has heard "Bad Guy" on the radio once, and that's enough for some people to become extremely interested in a house. In my opinion the BEST thing about HHN is simply the amount of variety we get each year so if you don't like one house there is 9 others for you to enjoy.

Sadly the worst part of these "Fads" is they are not a yearly thing. From Peak Walking Dead to Billie was around 10 years. So it kind of leaves the question of are we going to be waiting that long for HHN to find a property that massive again? And what if that "Fad" isn't obtainable? My main issue with going after the "next big thing" is what happens when there isn't one and how does that affect the future? Honestly, I think we could be looking at that question this upcoming year but fortunately, there is an anniversary year to help ease the lack of anything big. I'm just terrified to see HHN become a Hollywood and use IPs like Unfriended and Truth or dare just to get people into the parks because they don't have anything "Big".

I'm a huge music fan and while I don't think Billie is a fad at all, you never know how long her career will go for. Right now popheads have been hyping up Olivia Rodrigo like crazy, and she already broke a few streaming records Billie previously had. Alanis Morrisette was huge in the 90s and then took a dive in fame in the 00s.

Lorde had a huge 2014 with Pure Heroine, she was winning awards and having some good shows and festival bookings. Her 2nd album Melodrama was perfect too, yet she struggled to sell out arenas, and the press pointed that quickly.

Again, I think she'll be around a long time, she is a great artist, musician, and creative mind

However, popularity in the genre that she's in is short lived *especially* with the imagery she is using

I think Lorde actually took a step back on her own accord, but that's not for this thread

As an Billie fan, I'm kinda bummed that I won't get to see how this IP would have been interpreted. Don't know if this breaks any rules, but are there any details or specifics of what could have been that can be shared? Totally understand if not, thanks

Weird, it’s almost like Universal has made a deliberate effort over the past 3 decades to use IPs that are relevant to specific moments in time.

I know I’m taking a harsh tone, but I’m over “fans” trying to criticize Universal over recent decisions when it’s what they’ve done for, literally, three decades. It’s remarkably disingenuous and, more often than not, based solely on if the IP is liked or not.

And I’ll give you credit that you specific concerns about Eilish being a music house. But I legitimately want to know how many music houses you’ve gone through, because Orlando has only done one. That’s not enough attempts at anything to establish a prediction dismissing an entire genre of potential IPs.

I’ll see what specifics I can share about the Billie house. From what I’ve gathered, I’d describe it it as a hellish cross between Asylum in Wonderland and Nevermore: The Madness of Poe.

HHN doesn't need to have all timeless houses.

I would argue some of the best loved recent zones--Psychoscreapy, Vamp '55, Hellbilly Deluxe, more arguably Vamp '85--benefited greatly from a popular music soundtrack. An Eilish zone feels like the next logical step. Doubt it happens, but could absolutely be the hit of the event.

Okay... some stuff:

The basic concept was that we would enter Billie’s nightmares, which related to some of her songs. Some of the songs were All the Good Girls go to Hell, When the Party's Over, Bury a Friend, Copycat (the shadow figures that were sold off), and You Should See Me in a Crown. The visuals were based on various things: lyrics, music videos, concerts, and the Billie Eilish Experience.

The BEST part though, are what the sleep demons would have looked like.

Imagine this as a full mask and costume.

The house would have been an absolute trip.

I would have been totally down to check out that house. The only reason I kind of rooted against an Eilish house is that it was going to bring in an immense surge of people that would have made the crowds bigger than ever. Not only that, but it would have been a lot of teenagers who can, to be nice, be slightly annoying and disrespectful at HHN in large groups. So I was torn - while I was interested in what the house would entail, I was dreading the longer lines it would produce. Kind of felt the same about the GoT rumors tbh.
