I’m confused as how you can’t see scares? Last year with plexi glass you could see the scares coming but you could still see the scares. How is it different this year?

Could depend on the house.

Inevitably, due to guest feedback, Plexi-glass is gone by the start of Week 3 at the latest.

Set a reminder for 9/15 and come quote this post.

To my understanding, they tried a different type of material that was intended to be less obvious/visible and more durable. Ironically, it seems to have created severe ventilation issues (who... would have guessed) that are contributing to serious visibility issues of the actual scares, even with the bright trigger lighting.

My guess is the opening weekend may be a mess if immediate changes aren't instituted. (I don't think they will be.) After that, performer objections + guest outcry + feasibility issues may prompt a pivot between event weeks.

Yeah, that's a big ol' problem right there. An if there are those who arn't masked in the house, I can imagine any of those fogging up even quicker, especially in the tents where there's most likely not much space at all to move around in.

Either way, it's sounding like this'll be a very interesting couple of weeks. What's coming to mind for me at the moment is...I wonder how that's all gonna' look in the POV's that'll be filmed opening weekend...hoooo boy.

Curious, how long does it actually take to install or take them out?

Depends on how big the team is. But I would expect removal takes 4-5 days.

Well, they wouldn’t have time to remove it in one day. So that won’t happen.

They also have Team Preview Night. That’s kind of why they do it, as a last chance to stress test and fix things.

Still a tight turn around, but if it ends up being that much of an issue…

Really hope all of this bad news about the plexiglass continues. It could convince management to remove it all and make the airflow in the houses better, therefore making it safer from a COVID standpoint for everyone inside.

It’s also become apparent that the plexi-like surfaces are causing significant problems beyond cast morale. (Predictably, it seems many of the performers hate them. No idea if people are actually quitting, but it wouldn’t shock me.)

Apparently, you can’t currently see the scares.

There's like... Literally no way they're gonna run the houses like this, right...? I don't mean they literally won't hold the event but like have it with these vinyl covering things. Like I can't imagine how much of a headache it would be to deal with the wave of complaints that are going to come from scares literally being mostly invisible. I'm not trying to say anything for/against plexi or whatever, just from a PR standpoint to have the houses built with literally scare shutters seems like a literal nightmare

Depending on timing, they may not have a choice. At least, the first weekend. If they attempt to fix things, in place, until TM Preview in an effort to keep the barriers in place, they very likely won’t have time to remove them all before opening.

That is absolutely bonkers. I'm verrryyy interested in seeing what the hell they do, whether that be trying to fix them or remove them.

It makes you wonder; did they even bother to test the vinyl stuff before the literal point of no return? Seems like super sloppy management tbh, but I may just be seeing this wrong

TM Preview is on a Tuesday so that would give them 2-3 days to remove it but I just don't understand why if its this bad why wouldn't start taking it down already?

Show conditions in a house are VERY different than a test environment. There’s always some sort of “obvious” issue that doesn’t get fixed until week two or three (like the Mouthbrooders).

True true true. I just assumed the scares not being able to be seen would have been noticed a lot sooner than it was, I guess.

The rehearsals were, very likely, the first time anyone noticed the issue because it was, very likely, the first time they were in full show conditions.

4-5 days? If it’s screwed into the walls, I’d be embarrassed if I couldn’t clear a house in less than two hours by myself with a screw gun and an extra battery.

You also have the issue of needing to repair damage, ensure there's not anything sharp left, touch-ups, etc.

Clean-up from a pivot like this is almost as long as the actual install, at least in my limited set design experience.

Yep. Depending on how they were installed, there will likely be holes that need to be patched and painted. Then you have to clean up. It's basically making what was a finished product a construction site again. Lot of labor involved.

If it's as bad as they're saying and management comes to their senses, I think they do it between Weeks 1 and 2.
