Is there any evidence of this? It's closed in Japan and Hollywood in addition to Jaws closing at Universal Studios. This always sounds like one of those "rumor becomes fact" stories.

I was told that he's extremely fond of the attraction and was in fact upset when it closed in Hollywood. (Not so much Jaws, which ended up reflecting more of Jaws 2 than his own film.) I doubt he's made any direct threats or there's any ultimatums or anything, but I suspect closing it would strain his relationship with the parks division, which really needs to keep him on board due to the way their consultancy deal is constructed.

I'm going to be honest - I definitely could see Universal just deciding to keep it open as the only legacy ride.

They've shown a willingness to invest in it (redoing the goodbye with real name trick with a more modern system, rebuilding failing animatronics, adding new lighting, etc.) as well as Men in Black and Revenge of the Mummy, which tells me that they know they need quality attractions that predominantly rely on physical effects. The Studio park in particular has enough deficiencies at the moment, so there's no use trying to replace something that isn't broken. My only concern is the ride infrastructure (including backstage), which is definitely struggling.

I'd be curious if we could see an extended downtime for ET similar to Mummy, for them to redo infrastructure and systems.

How old is this ride system and is there still a factory supporting this ride system?

I always wonder how much merchandise of ET the park sells, the ride could always be busy just because people are already in the park, but i wonder how much it sells

I think the ride systems being out of date is something that is over emphasized. Example: Kennywood Park has a ton of rides dating back a century, or close to it. All those manufactures disappeared a long time ago. Their maintenance people are skilled enough that they can manufacture replacements on site and keep everything running with very minimal downtime.

From what I understand from previous pages on this thread, the piece-meal updates and upgrades we've gotten over the past few years was done in lieu of a lengthy full closure like Mummy got.

I feel like it’s a game of telephone and someone said “Spielberg was surprised” to learn they closed ET and now somehow that’s ballooned into IF THEY CLOSE IT IN ORLANDO SPIELBERG WILL WALK AWAY WITH EVERY FRANCHISE HE OWNS AND TANK THE PARKS AAHHHH

When in reality, there’s probably just some folks at UOR in upper management who have a soft spot for it and see it as the last opportunity to retain an original attraction for the park’s legacy….

…until they need the space.

E.T. will probably get re-themed to Shrek 5 or 6 in the next decade. Same with the SpongeBob store.

Shrek evicting a fairytale creature from its home really would bring it all full circle.

I believe it's an Intamin ride system, which is obviously still around but not sure if they still support it.

Or until the ride system needs to be replaced completely and the cost is more than a new attraction.

Or the ride system breaks down and the evacuation makes news.

There are good reasons why suspended ride systems both Universal and Disney don’t build them anymore. Sure they’re unique and fun, but they’re a nightmare to maintain and even worse when they have to do an evacuation.

Best case scenario if ET has to be replaced is that it gets replaced with a brand new attraction based on another classic property. I think Uni sees the benefit now of having a throwback attraction, if ET goes they'll want to fill that void, even if just to push the classic merch which must sell like hotcakes seeing how long the summer tribute store has stayed around.

They may not build any more, but that doesn’t mean Disney’s going to close Peter Pan.
