Still a bit shocking to me Asian cinematic horror hasn't really been represented at all, save for The Grudge 2 maze Knott's did many years ago (one of their only forays into IP).

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). That noise the Pods make when they would point at a human. Great jump scares for people.

Well, The Ring was kinda sorta there, in generic fashion in 2006's Orlando event but yeah - overall... nada.

Interstellar Terror was Event Horizon in all but name. That said, enjoyable enough movie, but probably zero chance of it at HHN until the inevitable "reimagining." No pop culture footprint.

They've often done "cult" IPs as a bone to horror die-hards.

That's another one I'm shocked we haven't seen "officially" yet..

Give it the Poltergeist treatment.

I feel like it's probably time to reiterate that this thread isn't really about discussing likelihood, that's a seperate conversation. Some horror properties are large enough to acknowledge in regards to HHN, but will in all actuality never make it to the event, whether because of licensing issues or a lack of haunt material.

Another Horror IP that could come to HHN is House of the Dead since Sega released the remake.

Can't believe we haven't had anything to do with Simpsons Treehouse of Horror yet. There's already a big Simpsons prescence in the park, and HHN seems to be very into comedy houses lately. THOH is one of my most wanted IPs of all time.

I think they would just change the queue video with segments from almost every Treehouse of Horrors episode.

Although missed ip is the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina since there’s lots of good moments that could fit in a maze.

Apparently, from what I heard, Fox repeatedly wanted to do a TOH version so that the ride could have a new overlay experience during the haunt season. Universal told them "NO" because they wanted to wait until the popularity of this new ride died down before doing anything "extra". If it's true, then you can think of Universal for not wanting to do it in the first place, and the opportunity to do has already passed.

Both sides were interested in developing a Treehouse of Horrors overlay while the ride was originally in development. However, the TV writers strike in 2007-2008, plus the extended contract negotiation with one of the voice actors, forced the ride to be developed on a compressed timeline. To account for that, they eliminated the Treehouse aspect from the conversation, with plans/hopes to revisit it later. However, it never did, for various reasons. Mostly because the costs/time requirements of NEW negotiations strictly for an overlay aren’t worth it.

Still they could just show segments in the queue line since The Simpsons Ride shows clips from past episodes.

Not anymore, they can’t. They have to license the individual episodes they show In the queue. At this point, that requires new negotiations with Disney.

This doesn't exactly fit the original intention of this thread, but this is where I think this post fits best.

I did some research to figure out the most popular and successful horror and horror-adjacent IPs that have yet to (officially) appear at HHN. I tried to balance mass appeal/popularity with how well each property would likely translate into a haunted house when creating this ranking. Here are what I feel are the top-40 that have yet to be featured at HHN:

  1. The Conjuring Universe (including The Nun and Annabelle)
  2. It
  3. Scream
  4. Five Nights at Freddy's
  5. The Thing (1982) -- never featured as a book report type of house.
  6. Hellraiser
  7. The Silence of the Lambs
  8. The Ring
  9. 28 Days Later
  10. Dawn of the Dead
  11. The Descent
  12. The Mist
  13. Outlast
  14. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
  15. The Lost Boys
  16. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
  17. Paranormal Activity
  18. Pet Sematary
  19. Pan's Labyrinth
  20. The X-Files
  21. The Fly
  22. Suspiria
  23. The Amityville Horror
  24. Terrifier
  25. The Addams Family
  26. Amnesia: The Dark Descent
  27. The Babadook
  28. The Grudge
  29. 30 Days of Night
  30. Dead Space
  31. Supernatural
  32. The Munsters
  33. Tremors
  34. Drag Me to Hell
  35. Shaun of the Dead
  36. Creepshow
  37. Re-Animator
  38. Blade
  39. Pumpkinhead
  40. Gremlins

Blue = Film
Red = TV series
Green = Video Game
* Some fall into more than one category.

Some of these would obviously work better as haunted houses than others, some are potentially too controversial, and some may have contentious rights issues. But, as you can see, the pickings are getting slimmer and slimmer with each passing year for fresh IP content.

Which IPs am I missing? Which don't belong?

I definitely think Dexter deserves to be on this list.

Impressive list, though I don't think any of those non-5 Nights games are making it absent a movie tie-in. Even then, I think Doom (which technically had a movie, may get another) and God of War (which I think I heard is getting one) seem more mainstream.

In terms of horror, missing a lot of Stephen King--not that it matters, never coming, and you did include Pet Semetary, which would be the best option if he ever relents (well, that or an anthology house). And I think you're sleeping on Lost Boys and Gremlins. I'd put both in the bottom half of the top 10, both for brand recognition and house potential. Wednesday, as opposed to a traditional Addams Family house, might rank higher as well.

"Horror-adjacent" probably too big and far afield to make a list, but if you tried, would have to include Game of Thrones and a number of John Carpenter flicks (Escape from NY, Big Trouble in Little China, They Live). I'd throw in Walter Hills' The Warriors as well.

While I don't 100% agree with some of your suggestions, you’ve brought up some great points. I’ve taken your feedback into account and made some tweaks to my list...

  1. The Conjuring Universe (including The Nun and Annabelle)
  2. It
  3. Scream
  4. Five Nights at Freddy's
  5. The Thing (1982) -- never featured as a book report type of house.
  6. Hellraiser
  7. The Silence of the Lambs
  8. The Ring
  9. 28 Days Later
  10. Dawn of the Dead
  11. The Descent
  12. The Mist
  13. Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
  14. The Lost Boys
  15. Wednesday/The Addams Family
  16. Gremlins
  17. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina
  18. Paranormal Activity
  19. Pet Sematary
  20. Pan's Labyrinth
  21. The Grudge
  22. Doom
  23. They Live
  24. The Fly
  25. Suspiria
  26. The Amityville Horror
  27. Terrifier
  28. 30 Days of Night
  29. The X-Files
  30. Dead Space
  31. The Babadook
  32. Drag Me to Hell
  33. Creepshow
  34. Shaun of the Dead
  35. Supernatural
  36. Tremors
  37. Pumpkinhead
  38. Blade
  39. Re-Animator
  40. The Munsters

In any event, I think my top-4 are the only IPs, yet to be featured at the event, that are capable of drawing big crowds on their own.

@Returning-The-Reaction fair question but if you were to add them--what music artists would fall under the top 40 if they would at all?

Hmmmm. I don't feel that I'm the best judge of potential musical acts, but I'll give it a go...

Potential costs and controversies aside, I think a potential musical artists list could include Slipknot, Metallica, Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Nine Inch Nails, Ghost, Avenged Sevenfold, Korn, Lady Gaga, Melanie Martinez, My Chemical Romance.

Which artists could crack the top-40? NiN, Slipknot, Rammstein, Ghost, Martinez, A7X, Manson, and MCR ?

I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention Iron Maiden. :)
