In general, I think it's a combination of the previous MCU Phases not generating any momentum or excitement for what his movie is going to be (in contrast with the Phase leading up to INFINITY WAR, which was all about teasing/setting the stage for that) and a general lack of real interest in much of the post-ENDGAME Marvel product. Bringing back Evans and Downey also threatens to weaken ENDGAME's finality in retrospect.

And for myself, I know quite a bit about this movie's rumored plot, and if accurate, it sounds incredibly dumb to me.

As someone who skips trailers to films I'm actively interested in, I don't know how or why you are subjecting yourselves to plot leaks that are influencing your reaction to a movie before you even sit down to watch it. Maybe the leak is wrong, maybe it's worded poorly and doesn't reflect the actual film; either way why not just let the movie speak for itself and not let your prejudgment cloud your viewing experience?

That said, as someone with a fledgling interest at best in super hero movies in general, the trailer looked good to me. It does a good job building up the next great threat through a single monologue to go along with some cool looking fight scenes. Doesn't look like my favorite movie of all time, doesn't look like a complete slog.

I will say it's wild how dark and muted the colors are. Maybe intentional for the dark desires of the villain but looks like such a lifeless, grey mess for a lot of the scenes.

Even if it’s poorly received by critics, I still think Avengers will hold pretty well thanks to the December release date that pretty much zaps all of January as well (Avatar, Star Wars, Greatest Showman, No Way Home, etc.).

I do think people are being a little hard on this trailer, mostly because of what's come before it.

It feels like Marvel is trying to right the ship without completely ignoring everything that's happened over the last few years. That means they need to resolve some lingering story threads while also tapping into a bit of nostalgia to hook audiences.

Acknowledging everything while also trying to course-correct was always going to be messy.

I think the biggest challenge this movie faces is making a fun film with a roster of heroes that, fairly or unfairly, hasn't connected with audiences the same way the Infinity Saga heroes did, all while making major story adjustments to the long-term plans - some unavoidable, some self-inflicted.

As for RDJ, it at least seems like he's playing Doom as Doom should be played. Whether the inevitable twist lands is another question entirely.

the only thing I can say is that marvel set up Kang as the big bad and set up hundreds of him as a big threat, and doom feels shoehorn in and feels like alast minute thing (which kinda is)
it doesn't feel like proper set up. not like how kang was set up. doom just was not set up at all. he just showed up at the end of fantastic 4 and now we have a big movie with him.

the way it was set up this should have been Kang's big moment and Kang's big movie, not Doom's.

The box office is in a weird place right now. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what's a hit anymore. Moana flopped, but Lilo & Stitch didn't.

Spider-Man is almost certainly going to put up huge numbers. Meanwhile, I'm genuinely shocked Minions isn't doing better, because it's actually really good.

One was 25 years old and classic animation style and one was 10 years old with the remake looking like it used more CGI animation than the Original CGI animated film.

Minions & monsters is boring to the fart joke crowd of under 14. It’s that simple.

You can’t take a fart joke IP and turn out a higher brow movie about the movie industry and expect people who wanted fart jokes to like it.

Talk to a pre-teen who has watched it. Most will say it’s boring even if you and I liked it more; and that demo carried the previous films. I think it’s fully about expectations on that one.

—-

As for expectations for doomsday? It’s pretty low for me. Even End Game was a ridiculous cameo fest if you’re really being honest. Absolutely ridiculous, in fact. From the one on ones to all female attack scene to the core 4 doing their thing. It was all about getting that audience reaction which was massive.

Why? Because… we cared about those characters. At least a good chunk of them. Even many of the minor cameo ones.

Contrast that with these ones… who even are those folks from wakanda getting that screen time? Shuri? Who is that again? I’m supposed to be excited about The Thing or new falcon? Even the amazing Florence Pugh… no one cares about Yelena.

The entire premise is going to try to replicate the setups for audience reactions like End Game did but these ones will be met with a wet fart.

These movies are formulaic as hell. People fully understand that now and while car stunts or dinosaurs can get away with that, time and time again we’ve seen that superhero’s don’t. I legit think it’s gonna struggle to hit $1b. Those saying it might hit $1.7… I just can’t see it.

The only thing that can save this movie is spiderman or wolverine. I have to assume we’ll see them in the future trailers to get better crowd reactions; because right now it’s a no for me, dawg.

I haven't read any leaks, I don't know what comics is this adapting, I don't know anything about anything from this movie, but I kind of can guess how the structure will go,
there will be a big fight where some lesser known characters might die, there might be a big twist, and it's... probably going to end in some cliffhanger. ..
sounds generic as hell but that's how it might play out. that's how infinity war played out, and age of Ultron in a way ... this might just be a repeat of Ultron with robots and everything

I'll put these under spoilers just because of how generic this movie could end up being that I might be guessing the entire third act.

The ticket battle was rough today. This whole "InfinityVision" thing just compacted the amount of theaters and screens available which meant they all sold out even faster than they normally would have.

'Avengers: Doomsday' Already Surpassed 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' in This Important Box Office Metric

By no means is this a surefire signal that it will hit $1.7, but the fact it outsold the entire first day of F4 presale tickets (which went on to make $521m total cume) in two hours with basically a single screen at each theater location is pretty wild.

Now I think this movie could have a monstrous first weekend for big fans and then have a massive drop off week 2 and 3 like many post Endgame movies, but I’d have to guess it at least makes a billion unless the movie is hated from the fan base.

Avengers Doomsday sold 5604 Tickets in 6 hours in the Bay Area
That is:
95% of Spider Man Brand New Day after 8 hours with 1/3 of its showtimes and 5 months away (WTF?!)
330% of Fantastic Four: First Steps after 6 hours

This movie will be supercharged by Spiderman like how BP supercharged IW. It is quite honestly impossible for this movie to not hit a Bil.

Dune is intense for families and kids and teens will need a movie for the holidays. This will make a billion with no problem.

For me, getting some of the gang back together (Thor and Cap) along with the Fantastic Four and X-Men hooks me pretty well. Having RDJ as Doom is a major hook. I might find myself rooting for him. Many of the more recent movies and characters just don't do it for me. Not sure if that is because I loved the original Avengers so much that I couldn't move past or if the characters were just forgettable.

In my opinion it’s three fold.

1) Many of the newer characters were a part of series and movies that were rushed in production due to COVID and corporate expediency, or as Feige said “quantity over quality”.

2) They had one, maybe two appearances over 6 years and never had those connectivity points like Avengers films to see them relate to other heroes.

3) And this is probably the biggest one…Most new characters were derivative. We had two new Captain Americas. Ms Marvel who copied Captain Marvel. She-Hulk who was the sister of Hulk. Yelena who was related to Black Widow. Kate Bishop who was trained by Hawkeye. Shuri as a new Black Panther. They’re extensions of existing characters who are less interesting than the original subject. Shang-Chi, F4 and Moon Knight may be the exceptions, but I’d refer you back to point #2 there.

The trailer is pretty clearly setting ip Battleworld, which is obviously the best and only choice for such an over-bloated course correction.

Not super shocking, but Variety is reporting that Doomsday hit $16.5 million just in the "limited" ticket release so far.

All great points and I would maybe argue that #1 was the biggest. I also think that the stand-alone early movies (Thor, Iron Man, Guardians, Captain America) were just better movies with good villains. The first Thor was a little slow but it eventually got there. Black Panther suffered from the tragic and all-too-soon loss of Boseman, who carried the Black Panther role so well. I just don't connect with the post-Endgame movies. Thor 4 had potential but ruined it by going for humor (some of it too childish to contemplate) over action, along with a villain that again did not resonate despite Bale's best efforts.

imagine if doom was going after the original main avengers team plus the guardians of the galaxy and hulk and iron man and spider man and war machine, everything..... that would have been epic. not really this team.
maybe the next movie will have more characters, but this team is not that cool. ( the x men are cool but like half the team is missing. imagine if the full x men team was joining the original avengers 10, 15 years ago against doom. thanos was really cool but this new movie can't reach that )
