A teaser was shown for Martin Scorsese's new film The Irishman during the Oscar's tonight.

I'm very excited to see this is getting a theatrical release. Goodfellas is one of my favorite films and I'm very glad to see Scorsese, De Niro, and Pesci getting back together for this one, as well as Pacino.

They're doing what they did for Roma. Limited release in theaters so they can qualify for the Academy Awards.

Side note, getting to see Roma in a theater was awesome. Such a beautiful film. Can't wait to see this one as well on a big screen. Scorsese and gangster movies are a match made in heaven.

Scorsese has pushed for a Wide release and last I heard, Netflix was going to give it to him.

I wonder if they would make more money that way than people buying Netflix for a month then cancelling.

I would love for it to get a wider release so more people have an opportunity to see it on a big screen! I'm just going based off of the above trailer that says "In select cinemas and on Netflix".

Last I heard, it was getting a 4-week minimum wide release before going onto Netflix, but maybe they changed their mind.

Hopefully we find out soon. Netflix has been pretty weary about setting an actual date for release. I know they're having a lot of issues with the de-aging. I work in the industry and have a few friends working on it and constantly hear about all the problems they keep having haha.

I watched it earlier on my phone and the last scene is probably the only bad one. I watched it there on my tv and it doesn't look any where near as bad. Al Pacino is 79, Robert De Niro is 75 and Joe Pesci is 76, I think they've done a great job.

First, both AMC and Regal have a hard rule that they will not put a movie in their theaters that does not give 90 day exclusivity to being shown in theaters prior to going streaming or rental. So if "4 weeks" is the push Scorsese is trying to get, it won't be a "wide release" by not having the distributorship of by far the two biggest chains which account for roughly 2/3 of the screens in the US.

Secondly, this is a ~$200m film that all the major studios passed on simply because of ROI. That's an unbelievable amount of money to spend on a drama. The cast (obviously) and technology used to make the faces younger are what spiked the costs and Scorsese wasn't going to do the film without using that tech. So Netflix clearly thinks they need to spend gobs of money on films to keep their viewership. Netflix bought this for streaming, period. Getting money in the theaters was never their intention or plan.

So while it could qualify for the Oscars like Roma, unless they go 90 days, it won't be a wide release. Scorsese can pressure Netflix, but not AMC/Regal.

-----

Now, about the actual movie; this thing looks awesome. De Niro has been mailing it in for over a decade it feels like. Uninspired rolls and just coasting through any line he has. It's been awful to see, honestly.
He's shown more passion and care in this role from this trailer than he has all of his films the last decade combined. It's obvious Scorsese, Pesci and Pacino can pull greatness out of him that other co-actors and directors cannot

I definitely agree with @andrew - it's great seeing Pesci again.

It doesn't look very good, in all honesty. But that's just my opinion.

I'm going to go out on a limb (not really a big one) and say you aren't their target demographic. Not many 17 year olds are into dialogue driven dramas.

I'm into dramas, but this doesn't look very interesting. But again, that's just my opinion.

Those are all awesome films, but I'd still have to watch Goodfellas last. Otherwise, whatever I saw afterwards would pale in comparison. :toast:

Edit: Sometimes I like to look at what film won best picture the year a masterpiece like Goodfellas comes out. It was Dances with Wolves. Can't argue there.

That's because they purposely chose not to show any of the shots that are giving them a hard time haha. What they seem to be having the most difficulty with is their necks. It's hard to smooth out a wrinkly neck without making it look fake and rubbery.

Since most people will be watching on Netflix, they could choose a convenient time to buffer the video. Hard to notice bad CGI at 360p.

The Irishmen is officially NOT getting a wide release (aka no Regal, AMC, or cineplex). It will however open in smaller theaters across the nation. So hopefully, everyone will get a chance to see this on a big screen. You may just have to drive a bit further for it depending on your location.
