One thing that made me chuckle at Volcano Bay was one of the water depth indicators in Te'Awa was placed upside-down, so it had "NI" instead of "IN." :p

(Screenshot from IU's POV)

Also, there are some themed water depth indicators in Te'Awa, but the rest are just standard white ones. Might've run out of time or money, who knows?!

And LAST THING: I noticed that the tile lining Te'Awa is differently colored for each area of the park you're in. (Red and yellow under Krakatau, brown and green in the Rainforest Village, etc.)

Because 'Water is Life'.... It would be nice if there was some kind of explanation in the backstory. I like the look of the blue but it would be nice to know why its blue and not red/orange.

Maybe the volcano is extinct and the Waturi added the eruption effects as part of their theme park and made it blue because, you know, 'water' theme park. :peace: That actually kind of flows with the idea that the park was built around the volcano and there are no other 'lava' effects. This could also explain why Vol is depicted the way he is. He is mythological but the Waturi have depicted him in a 'theme park' fashion as entertainment based on their culture. If you think about it, why build a theme park next to an active volcano? And what active volcano has a giant waterfall falling from its cone? Hmmmmm its all coming together now... :saywhat: :bolt:

However, nowhere has Universal even hinted at any of these concepts in their backstory that the volcano is extinct and the Waturi are bringing the volcano back to life through man made effects. The narrative from Universal to me suggests the volcano is active and Vol can make his presence known.

The whole attempt to explain things away as "the Waturi people built the park.." is as convincing to me as the whole "Dinorama is built on a parking lot" nonsense.

Neither is particularly good design.

Few quick notes from tonight's visit -

  • Fearless River looked to be on full max settings. Definitely leaps and bounds better than first few weeks.
  • Area around Vol was turned off with a few walkways blocked. Area is small - so if that's it - woof....
  • Carpet added to Volcano Bridge to help prevent slips.
  • Vol is a statue, with arms and legs and the big amount of space where the face should be projected. Me thinks what was seen was a test and not what will be the final look.
  • The Stargazer Cave had LED Lights off - looks like they may be working to finish this next area next.
  • Staircase steel starting to get painted and themed finally.
  • A couple more cabanas opened up.

What are you talking about? I have it on good authority the Waturi people's religion doesn't belioeve in painting exposed steel on staircases as it may offend their water gods.. or something.. cuz reasons.

I've seen that volcano erupt many times and have yet to hear any sort of eruption sounds signaling guests to focus on the volcano...when are we getting that?

The Waturi people don't believe in volcano sounds or the signaling of guests.

I get what you are saying and comparing, however, Volcano Bay was never suppose to integrate the slides into the landscape. The theme is that the park was ADDED to the landscape, not a PART of the landscape. Typhoon Lagoon is mostly themed to where you are riding 'natural' slides in the landscape that formed from a typhoon. Volcano Bay is a landscape where a water park was added to it. That is why all the slides and supports are exposed, they were added to the environment. This is why the rivers don't have rock work edges, they were man made and are not 'natural rivers'. As I noted earlier in the thread, there are no exposed volcano supports for the rock work, the only exposed supports are for the slides.

I understand why many think the slides and supports should be integrated into the landscape. However, judge the park on what the theme is suppose to be, not what you want it to be. This is not a criticism of what theme is better, more just to point out what the VB designers were going for. There are many other issues that were missed in VB during its rough opening but execution of their intended theme was pretty good.

Honestly, I love Typhoon Lagoon, but I think the three raft rides Keelhaul Falls, Mayday Falls and Gangplank Falls are the only slides that succeed in 'natural' themeing. The other slides, while nicely hidden in the rock work and are fun rides, truly don't make sense from a themeing standpoint. Why is there fiberglass 'naturally' occurring in the landscape? Those slides should have been made of different material to look like smooth rock if they truly wanted them to be themed in a natural landscape. Same for blizzard beach, melted snow apparently makes fiberglass. Again, fun slides and interesting theme idea and great integration of 'hidden' supports but if you think about it, it just doesn't make sense. Especially from a company that prides itself in the details...

Don't get me wrong, I understand why it's meant to look different but there is a huge difference between being man made and being man made by an early civilisation that the Waturi people are meant to be. I wouldn't have a problem with supports being visible if they were covered in bamboo or made to look like rickety old wood but just plain exposed steel is such a contrast to this world they're trying to showcase.

Yes, I knew this looked familiar! I used to love this show as a kid. Maybe that's what Universal should add in the expansion. A chance to be part of the Legends of the Hidden Temple game show. I'd sign up for that.
