If the behind-the-scenes stunt driver theming is true and the word Hollywood is being used less literally and in more of a “movie magic” sort of way - Backlot Drift would have been a sick name.

That, or Studios Drift like someone else suggested.

Both much better options.

Just to clarify, Hollywood can mean two different things. One is the actual place. The other is as a descriptor. So when something is described as “Hollywood,” it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s tied to the real place, as with the coaster's name.

Not saying that doesn't make it any less confusing. Just explaining what the name means.

But, confusingly, the name is almost assuredly based on the precedent of "Tokyo Drift" which used the name of a city in its literal, geographic (not industry, not descriptor) meaning. The setting of the movie and place the cars were sliding around in the movie was Tokyo.

(It would be slightly more clear to me if the New York area was named New York Backlot.)

Heh....Super Bowls past....'Hollywood' Henderson of the Dallas Cowboys ....He wasn't from Hollywood,
didn't live in Hollywood. He just wore shades and was a big b.s. (which ended up biting him in the butt,
after Steelers made him look the fool).
In other words, Hollywood can mean a lot of different things besides location.

Again, I'm not advocating that it isn't confusing. Just explaining what was implied to me as the thought process behind the name!

It's the beautiful complication of a Studio Park. Some areas are real locations (like Potter and Springfield), some are studio sets (ET, New York). They can always move the goal posts depending on the need, sense be damned.

Honestly, I'm hoping this is the first piece to fall so they can go back to the "Riding the Movies" mantra.

Hagrid's Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure is a dumb name for a universally loved, world-class attraction. Let's hope this name at least makes a little sense for the complete experience, and we get another universally loved, world-class attraction. I would bet so, given it's Universal and Intamin.

Only positive thing I can say is I hope this is at least a people eater.

And good riddance to Supercharged.

As for the name, yes, it's silly due to where it is but it's nothing I'm gonna' get hung up over. The main matter is we're getting a coaster which I'm very intrigued to see take shape and so forth.

Also, I'm pleasantly surprised they actually confirmed Supercharged is closing next year. Personally for me that's a win-win since I didn't think they would announce that.

Over at Disneyland, some fans are concerned that playing the John Williams score in Galaxy's Edge will undermine the diegetic immersion of the land. Universal is like "hold my beer" and puts a "Hollywood Drift" coaster in the New York area. Wild week in theme parks.

But mark my words, if Disney puts a Buzz Lightyear ride in New Orleans Square I'm done with this hobby.

2 things: 1. I would've preferred a different name but I'm still gonna ride the hell out of it regardless. 2., I think many online are suddenly acting like they didn't also assume Hollywood Drift was called Hollywood Drift because it's located at Universal Studios Hollywood LOL

The name in and of itself is not a big deal…some of the best roller coasters in the world have dumb names.

I think the concern is that this represents a notable step back from UO’s recent efforts to really dial in on placemaking. Ever since swapping International Food Festival for a full-blown Springfield, Universal’s been surprising us with little non-ROI touches throughout the park that add to the depth of the environment. Off the top of my head…
-Improved Raptor Encounter location
-Latvian protestors outside Dr Doom during downtime
-Improved food stand aesthetics in New York
-Better signage/color scheme at ET entrance

One roller coaster isn’t going to change all the good throughout the park, but I don’t think it’s unfounded to be worried about what this one decision represents going forward.

With that said…that spike is going to look awesome. Velocicoaster is the best thing Universal has done since building IOA, so bring it on.

Is it an odd decision to go with the same name as Hollywood's coaster? Yes. Could it have been a better name? Yes.

That being said, I think y'all are really overblowing how much impact a name will have. Most tourists will just see the news and go "Oh cool new coaster". Hagrid's has one of, if not the biggest mouthful and worst ride name I've ever seen and is considered one of the best themed coasters in the world and nearly a decade later still gets the longest lines in the park by far. I think F&F will be fine.

I’m just not sure that’s happening here. People are clowning the name, but (and maybe I’ve missed it!) I don’t think anyone is claiming it’s a catastrophe or that it’ll have a massive impact on the park.

All Universal released was a couple of stats and … yes, a pretty dumb and lazy name (IMO). That’s what we’re gonna talk about until we get bored / more information.

Maybe once the USH coaster opens Universal will want to ride (pun intended) the momentum and announce more details for USF, like a piece of concept art.

or maybe a better example is how Florida literally has a city called Hollywood in Broward county so this ride is based on the real Hollywood Florida lol
I think I'll bring up this Hollywood city whenever the new name is discussed from now on lol

Sorry, I thought we were talking about the USH version. Wow, we’re already demonstrating how confusing this is.
