So it seems like Universal let some people do construction tours recently?

Universal Kids Resort Progress Tour – Frisco, TX
Today, we had the opportunity to tour the Universal Kids Resort construction site in Frisco, Texas. The visit included a behind-the-scenes look at the ongoing development of the 300-room hotel and the exciting progress being made across the theme park grounds.

About Universal Kids Resort
Universal Kids Resort is an innovative, family-focused theme park currently under development by Universal Destinations & Experiences. Designed specifically for families with young children, the park broke ground in November 2023 and is scheduled to open in May 2026.

Key Highlights
Size & Scope: The 550 million dollar resort will span 32 acres and include a five-story, 300-room hotel designed with families in mind. Ticket sales and hotel reservations are expected to be available before the end of 2025.

Themed Lands: Seven immersive areas are planned, each themed around beloved children’s franchises:
*Gabby’s Dollhouse
*Trolls
*Shrek and Puss in Boots
*Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous
*SpongeBob SquarePants
*Minions

Attractions: The park will feature a variety of kid-friendly rides and interactive experiences, including swing rides, spinning tea cups, a river rapids adventure, an aerial carousel, and two roller coasters. The attractions are geared primarily toward children ages 3–9.
Design Vision: With a strong emphasis on lush landscaping and interactive play areas, the resort is designed to spark creativity and imagination through hands-on, immersive experiences. Shaded lawns and character meet-and-greet zones will also be featured in the central hub of the park.

Construction Progress

Construction began in late 2023, and significant strides have already been made. The structural framework of the 300-room hotel is well underway, and work has begun on several themed areas of the park. Infrastructure, ride foundations, and landscaping preparation are actively progressing, with crews working to keep the timeline on track for the grand opening in May 2026.

We’re excited to see this one-of-a-kind destination continue to take shape and look forward to sharing more updates as development moves forward.

Isle of Curiosity is so much of a better name than "Kids Resort", but of course the SEO isn't as good. It's a great "hub" name.

And is it just me, or is it kinda wild to see all this dirt all around and, all of a sudden, a Bikini Bottom bus fully-painted and ready to ride?

A fly through of the construction.

Does Texas not have drone laws? Not complaining but surprised you can just fly a drone around all this area

HB 912 makes it illegal to capture, use, or distribute images of individuals or property without consent.

https://www.legis.state.tx.us/tlodocs/83R/billtext/pdf/HB00912I.pdf

It is a Class C misdemeanor, which is the least severe type of misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $500, and does not carry jail time. It’s basically like a traffic violation. I am assuming video falls under “images,” and each time they do it and post it could potentially be considered individual violations, thus individual fines, so hopefully they stay anonymous, because I don’t know what the statue of limitations are on this.

Since you have to have the property owner’s permission, I don’t know how enforceable it is, since officers would basically have to ask the drone pilot for proof of property owners consent. Universal could go after them though, and request prosecution, and that fine could be worse.

There’s also the issue of it simply being a hobby. What if you’re just flying it around to have a closer look, but not taking video or images? You're just watching it on a screen in real time. Or the pilot deletes the captured video and images immediately, showing the officer that nothing had ever been recorded. They’re not going to seize evidence if the pilot is respectful and fully cooperative, agreeing to show them when requested, but there’s nothing there to show.

Then there are FAA rules. Drones weighting over 0.55lbs (250 grams) must be registered. Most dinky hobby drones are at or below that. They must also remain under 400 feet (122 meters). Most affordable hobby drones won’t go higher than 262 feet (80 meters). You must also keep visual sight of your drone at all times, meaning your own eyes need to physically see it, not some screen. So if they are flying high enough that they can’t hear it. They most definitely can’t see it, especially if they are flying over the property. But that also means Universal can’t see or hear it, so they can’t call the cops for immediate enforcement. Only after they see video/images posted online, could they really do something about it. I know that when local news media covers it, their drones fly around the outside perimeter, with Universal’s permission. (Mostly because it tends to be NBC) They never fly through the park itself, which brings along the last bit of FAA rules, which is that you cannot fly over people without some kind of FAA waiver. This is mostly for safety. If a drone were to suddenly malfunction, if it hits anyone, the injuries could be serious, possibly even life threatening. So some videos are probably taken during weekends or holidays, but videos you see with actual construction crew present, most likely don’t have this waiver.

Updated Universal Kids Resort concept art is out. The hotel includes huge IP-filled murals.

I'm going to Texas this weekend and was looking at a map and just so happy how close this is to Dallas

I'm hoping the park will have lots of characters as well since USH has been killing it with them lately, I hope they keep leaning on them as extra entertainment and "filler" attractions when the rides lines are too long

It can be a quick drive up the Dallas North Tollway from downtown Dallas. Just avoid rush hour or it'll take twice as long.

Good to see new artwork that aligns with the construction we see on the ground! The biggest change appears to be the omission of the large building on the far right of the park in Bikini Bottom. I'm curious if they had bigger plans for what was supposed to be in there, as the entrance was Spongebob's pineapple. Now that site is a Zierer Roundabout. Furthermore, it looks like the Krusty Krab is gone?

It looks like Camp Cretaceous has more substantial buildings, and what could be a large (immersive?) queue for the Mack coaster.

To say this park has lots of color would be an understatement.

One of those Jurassic buildings is getting some iconic theming.
