I almost rage quit in real life because I didn't know where to go because of the blackouts...I wasn't a big fan of last year's Exorcist blackouts. Sure, they were scary, but they felt cheap like "I can't believe I screamed, it's just a mannequin girl in the dark." But at least they made sense with Murdy paying tribute to the teaser, yada yada yada...
If there are blackouts with Jack standing there "scaring us" instead of real people chasing us I will cry actual real life tears.
Um... there was really only one Regan mannequin in the dark. The other two were actually part of a scare tactic. As for the rest of the "blackout" scenes, they at least had scareactors- Pazuzu, Regan, & even Father Karras. And even the changing Regan/Pazuzu face walls were great. Exorcist was the least offensive use of Murdy's beloved black walls.I wasn't a big fan of last year's Exorcist blackouts. He did? That's where I got confused.I thought he said he was gonna try to convey Danny's visions? Either way as long as Bear Man's in the maze it'll be good
How I see it, it's more like:i made some fake taglines for the mazes
shining - black walls everywhere
saw - water spray the maze
blumhouse - the tooth fairy's and j.k Simmons revenge
titans of terror - the conjur oh wait we don't have the rights, hey at least we didn't replace it with fear the walking dead
insidious chapter 4 - we're 4 months behind
ash vs evil dead - hey at least you got the classic evil dead

Could they have done a few things to improve those scenes? sure... but meh.
It's interesting about the blackout walls. I can totally understand how many feel it's a "cop out", but there is another side to that coin. I recently posted on another thread here about a year round haunt I experienced in the Niagara Falls area (Canada side) called Nightmares. There's actually a lot of year round haunts in this particular tourist area, but I had heard from multiple sources that this was the best one.
And you know what? It's essentially ALL blackout walls. No theming whatsoever, just near total darkness. (You find your way around by following a series of small red lights--which occasionally go out.) And that fear of the total unknown creates it's own fear. To a certain degree, that's part of the unease I felt in The Exorsist last year... those blackout wall sections were very disorienting, and you would really have no idea where the scareactors would come from.
So if used effectively, I have no problem with them. Fear of the dark is a real thing for many people.
