Kudos to all that enjoy RIP, I personally like to do what I want when I want with no schedule or follow the leader, even if its a longer express wait. Just my preference.

OPINION: The Great Halloween Horror Nights Express Debate: Balancing Business and Fan Loyalty

Universal Orlando's decision to discontinue Fear Passes with Express for Halloween Horror Nights 35 was always going to upset someone. The discussion has dominated the conversation over the past day, and understandably so. It's one of the biggest changes to HHN ticketing in years, and there are A LO

The communication piece you touched on remains the biggest issue to me. It's not lost on me that they also dropped a last-second F&F closure date change on the UOAP IG channel, of all places, yesterday lol.

Kinda feeling like it's time to crack this bad boy back open:

Thread '"Is anyone awake?" The Universal Social Media Thread'

Dec 3, 2012
Thanksgiving Night, someone from Universal Orlando's social media team tweeted and posted on Facebook the following question "Hello, is anyone awake?" at 11 PM EST. They never followed up on responses to it, and it looks like it was posted by mistake by someone who had too much turkey...or Wild Turkey...

If this were the only instance of "WTF?!" from Uni Social Media, it would be forgivable, but they are repeat offenders. Their ineptitude is amplified by the aptitude of their competitors at the Disney Parks Blog. While @DisneyParks does make the occasional gaffe, they do a fairly good...

But also want to throw a hearty "agreed" to the bit on comments "criticizing how others choose to experience Halloween Horror Nights". I agree with the decision to remove the express option as of now, but damn. Who cares how people spend their hard-earned vacation/staycation money? You can have an opinion on the subject without belittling and attacking what makes people happy. Their spending has genuinely no impact on you whatsoever.

Conversely, Disney didn’t announce more than a month out CoP, UOE, and GMR were closing. Sometimes decisions are quick and there’s nothing to announce early!

I totally agree with your overall point. However, I think there would be infinitely more uproar about this closure if people cared about this ride for the simple fact that this announcement means that they may have just last minute paywalled the final ride-throughs (depending on what happens with this AP night) without giving people a chance to plan for it. Fortunately, no one cares about Supercharged so there's no drama, but it's still a bit of a communications blunder.

Fully register that we're venturing into "wrong thread" territory tho lol

The have only been about 25 pages of this discussion, but I have a question. Why do people need FFP with express? If you have a FFP and can go every night, why do you need express?

To me, it absolutely felt like a cheat code. This is going to be a benefit for those of us that only get 1-2 nights a year to experience the event. Which, I have a feeling, is probably a bigger percentage of the customer base than those that have FFP with express.

I mean, I think I covered this before, but it’s not really a need as much as it is a hot commodity for the price point.

I’m not a big steak guy but if you offered me a $200 steak for like 20 bucks, I’d probably buy the steak. Because of the price it was being offered at, it felt like a really good deal. If you tripled the price, even people who can afford it aren’t going to necessarily buy it because the value just isn’t there. I just don’t see a lot of multi night ticket holders buying even single night express because it’s very similar to what you said, express is really meant for people who may have a night or two there. The value of it comes from the fact that it comes with the pass for a really reasonable price. But if I have multi night and I’m going 18 to 20 nights, I’m just not gonna fork over $500 for two of those nights to have express and just get a slightly different experience when I could’ve just waited in line and planned a little differently for that night.

Some will argue that they just don’t like standing in lines and that’s why it is needed. Some of my best memories were made waiting in lines at horror nights, I just don’t really care that much. Universal offers disability services for people who truly cannot stand in line for disability reasons, and I highly doubt that would change anytime soon. Perception is truly the ruler of your life, and I’m just getting to the age where I refuse to let anything make me upset for any reason especially when in reality I’m spending money to go on a vacation at my favorite place with my favorite people during my favorite time of year. I think I would be more upset if they dropped pumpkin beer from returning then then they dropping express with FF lol.

Even with the express passes in the past, I typically never did Alton houses more than like a night or two. Very rarely do I even like all of them enough to do them that many times. This year‘s lineup is honestly really rock solid for me, and I’m sure even then I will maybe only do one of the unannounced ones as of yet probably once during premium scream night, unless it just turns out to be phenomenal for some reason.

I’m honestly in favor of them just dropping express across the board for horror nights, but that’ll never happen lol. If you really wanna talk about an interesting impact a wait times, that would do it. But it’s such a money driver. That’ll never happen.

It’s been discussed to death. Most of the conversation around this assumes that only a local will buy the multinight passes and that out of town guests will only buy single night tickets.

This is not the case.

We travel to Orlando specifically for HHN and stay for a week. It’s cheaper to get ROF instead of single night passes for that trip.

We also are getting older and can’t do a 12-hour HHN night in order to get the most out of the visits. So we buy the express add-on

We are fans of the event and want to see the houses more than once. We don’t have the luxury that a local has to go 700 times over 2 months.

Is getting an 11th sandwich free after getting 10 punches on your local deli punchcard for buying the same sandwich each time a “cheat code”? Is an AMC Stubs member who uses the discount to see the same movie over and over and over again using a cheat code? This notion that guests are cheating by using the available products and policies to experience HHN repeatedly is BS.

This is out of topic, but because my enthusiasm for KKFOS is making you all so happy during this chaos and controversies, i’ll give you a funny story that just happened today.

So I was on my work break when the scare zone got announced, and I legitimately screamed so Bloody Mary (no pun intended) loud with pure joy, that everyone in the break room thought I was getting murdered. :nervous:

Honestly I will wear that cringy memory as a badge of honor when it comes to this announcement.

It's simple. People like to enjoy themselves at the event, not wait in lines all night. The quality of your time spent at the event is just as important as how much time you spend there.

Good news! You're still welcome to buy single night Express Passes if you're not willing to wait in long lines like the rest of us.

I think it's very possible that the combination of houses opening at 2 PM and the removal of FFP + Express helps to bring wait times down across the board. I'd say throw in a price hike for single-night Express tickets for good measure!

The outrage surrounding this announcement has been entertaining to watch. I genuinely hope people who are upset with this change keep their word of reducing their number of visits and limited spending on merch/food/drinks/etc. A lot of respect to those who hold that up.

To make the situation worse, can we get Fortnitemares tomorrow? lol

As an out of town-er who has gotten the opportunity to attend HHN merely twice in his adult life (hey, living in Connecticut ain't cheap, my guy), I can see both how it would be frustrating as somebody who is either a local and relishes in the chance to enjoy the houses as much as possible / an out-of-town-er who needs those express passes to fully make their trip worth it in a maximum effort as well as how potentially exciting it could be that this move could help reduce crowd-age and help lines move faster.

At the end of the day, I think if you're privileged enough to have been someone who has enjoyed the FFP + Express for years on end, remember the good times but remember the event itself is still going to be there, it's just the way you engage with it that will change.

I do think it's fascinating to wonder what the reception would be if instead of eliminating FFP + Express entirely, Universal simply dropped a massive price increase relative to the value of such an undoubted steal of a deal (which I would assume they'd have the numbers to work out mathematically). Surely there'd be outrage because money as well as the portion that utilize the deal to maximize multiple/one longer vacation as opposed to being able to use it every weekend the event is held. But would the discontent be a lot quieter because the option would still be a reality?

There's no way Halloween Horror Nights is ever going to be an event that makes everyone happy. It's simply an enormously attended event now to be so. Whether it be their own financial gain or guest experience (as with most things the truth is probably in the middle), Universal made this decision for a reason because the event is just getting bigger and bigger.

To me, as a completely average dude who likes theme parks/HHN from very a-far, it's kind of mind boggling that Universal hasn't at least considered doing some drastic things to improve the event on an infrasturctural level (maybe they have?). Horror will always be a cash cow and the only thing that has halted the event's growth was a global pandemic. HHN is something the company should be falling over itself to leverage into being even bigger.

As a 30 year old man, I am unironically pumped for Fortnitemares. The game is goofy as all get out, but the fact it’s at HHN just makes me very excited to see how it’s pulled off. Any video game, really, I’m always excited about at the event.

Reading that FFP+Express was $260 in 2010 makes me want to hurl. (I just spent $640 for 2 nights with express)

This is what has always kept me from doing RIP. I'm not willing to shell out that money to not be able to do what I want when I want.

Also the risk of ending up with a group of people I don't like lol

I don’t think removing FFP with Express has to do with some isolated group of people who are “spamming” the Express lines over the course of two months. The reality is every body that’s in an Express line represents another Express Pass that can’t be sold. The FFP+E user who would speedrun 25 houses a night represented the same opportunity cost as the FFP+E user who came for a single house on a Thursday after work; in both cases, that’s two $150+ Express Pass sales that did not happen that night.

I guarantee you Universal is not diving into data as granular as number of Express redemptions per pass…all they need to see is how many park admissions the average FFP+Express scanned to determine how much lost Express sale revenue this ticket tier was costing them per year.

Put another way, everyone needs to stop throwing around “spamming” and “cheating” and getting all critical over each other’s visiting habits. Your frustration is better aimed at the company who made this decision in the first place.

Yeah, nothing worse than paying to be stuck all night with a group of people you don’t gel with (which, with a fanbase as passionate as HHN’s, was…fairly common). The Private RIPs are the way to go but they’re just so expensive.
