Another HHN gone, yet another speculation season has begun! Back to it! Also thank you
@Brian G. for opening the spec thread earlier than previous years. There is a lot I want to get out there for speculation.
Before I get into my personal speculation, I'm going to go through your posts after I post mine as I don't want my personal spec to be influenced by y'alls. I know I already talked to some of you about it outside of the thread, but I want to have as much of an individual view as possible to see where we align and I can respond afterwards to everyone's. That said, here is my entry into the speculation ring:
First, it's going to be very helpful to identify trends HHN has been doing in recent years. There are some caveats of course, but generally speaking, they are looking for specific slots for IPs. You have the obvious slasher IP (Terrifier & Jason), the headliner (FNAF), and as of recent, an IP that may reach for broader appeal not specifically to a horror audience. You could argue that's where FNAF would lie, but I'm looking more towards the Weeknd and WWE. The event will still be at its core a horror event (As it should be). The long wait for Terrifier should be a testament to that. That being said, I think they will still be determined to have an IP that can be "close enough" to horror, but still have a broader reach to people who may not be horror fans, if that makes sense. Weeknd fans may not be horror fans, but they may come out to see the event. Same with WWE fans. Not sure if they succeeded in that regard judging by the consistently low wait times for that house. If this was indeed the most successful year ever, then I guess they did something right here.
Another thing to note as that I would expect to chase more video game IPs. It just dawned on me that we didn't have any video game IPs featured last year. BUT Quiet Place did release a video game last year (And a new movie but still). Video game release for an IP seem to be "as important" as a new movie release in this market. All that to say that video games and traditionally movie IPs with video game releases are going to have a little more leverage into what goes into the lineup.
Now here's what I think will come next year:
For Sure:
FNAF 2: I've been thinking they would just pull an AVP and repeat it the following year to save money., but recently I'm gonna recant that. If Florida were to do FNAF 2 and Hollywood was stuck doing a repeat, FNAF fans would be
pissed. I think FNAF 2 is a safe bet since this is looking to be the next Stranger Things. The overwhelming popularity of the house has proven it.
La Llorona repeat: Hey don't shoot the messenger, I don't want this either, trust me. After hearing Murdy claim that Monstrous 3 came very close to being HOTY, I would be shocked if this doesn't happen. Think about it. All of the reasons you don't want it to return are the very reasons Universal would want it to return. The GP clearly
loves La Llorona, they can still get another year out of the Dia de los Muertos decor, half the house is already built so they can literally just put it back together for next year (Facade is still stored away!), and finally, with this playing such a vital role in the event's history, they can spin this as a celebration for HHN's 20th anniversary. On top of that, with Scarecrow being repeated when it's premiere year was 2022 (Same as LL's), it's "overdue" to be repeated. Not to mention this would fulfill HHNH's apparent repeat mandate to save money on IPs that will require a healthy budget...something that next year will likely have.
Likely:
Resident Evil: I'm convinced the reason why we haven't seen Resident Evil yet at Hollywood is simply because they never had the budget to do it properly. After FNAF and Fallout, it's clear they are finally at the point where they can execute it well. This seems like a natural fit in the Hudson Gate building. With the clear direction towards video game IPs and the larger budget for HHN, I think it's time!
Hellraiser: Heard the rumors before the vent ended. New video game comes out next year (Or late this year?). Like I said earlier, video game releases now have as much "pull" as a new film release, so it's all coming together here. Finally.
Halloween: Again, don't shoot the messenger, but if they can't get Scream, I really think this is what they're going to do. This will likely be our slasher slot here. They have yet to do H3, so maybe this is what (I hope!) they do. They tried during the pandemic era so maybe this will be their chance.
Possibly:
Music IP: This ties in to my "far-reaching" category. The music IP would be it. They are going to want to go as high as possible. WWE was a tribute to Bray Wyatt so I wonder if they could do the same with Ozzy. Lady Gaga would also be broad appeal. Also worth noting, Universal is going to release a Michael Jackson movie next year....Thriller house? You know that would absolutely create broad appeal.
Silent Hill: If this happens, I think this would be our Hollywood exclusive. Murdy wants to do it again and of course there's the push for video game IPs. I don't see Orlando's team itching to do it, so we'll see.
IT: I think this is closest we'll get to this IP coming. New show came out and it seems to be doing well. Warner Bros ain't doing too well so maybe they'll be more willing to play ball with Universal?
I want to get into what I don't think will happen and more of what I hope to see, but this post is already getting quite long, so I will divide this up into another post. Forgive me mods!
