This thread is dedicated to all Speculation & Rumors for this year's Halloween Horror Nights 2024 event at Universal Studios Hollywood.

As always, we ask that all speculation come from realistic expectations and adds to the discussion. Please keep discussions about wishful thinking/dream properties to the HHN Wish List threads. Official news will be shared on the News & Info thread.

We will be monitoring this thread very closely. We understand the appeal of a new speculation season and everyone is antsy to start talking about what's next. At the same time, we don't want the threads to devolve into chaos. We kindly ask you to please respect the guidelines of discussion so we can avoid locking discussions.

Thanks.

DISCLAIMER: This thread contains discussion centered around rumors and sometimes could include baseless speculation, and should be treated as such. Posts are not confirmations. Any official announcements for HHN will be shared on our main site, InsideUniversal.net

I speculate….

We see a sequel to The Last of Us, whether it be set in the first game still or they move on to the second is beyond me though.

And my current shock speculation - We see no Universal Monsters house next year. But I don’t know what breaks tradition first, this or the Latin America house.

I would love to see the previously rumored solo Nightmare on Elm Street House. Would do well as a soft icon too.

As for the Latin American house, I can totally see one based on Duendes (elves) as there is a lot of lore there, or a house based on the Island of Dead Dolls, which Murdy has previously said is a huge source of inspiration for him.

——-

I would LOVE to see a Silent Hill house though, especially after the success of SH2 Remake. But I won’t get my hopes up.

If we get no TLOU, you know what’s a property I could see as likely coming? Zombieland. The 2019 Orlando scare zone looked fun and it’s a trope/ IP Hollywood hasn’t tapped since TWD left.

(after thinking about this more, this would be a great Terror Tram theme)

Lots of potential here.

Rumors have been going around being that Legacy has mentioned the possibility of the titans of terror returning for HHN 2025. I would like to see silent hill 2 as a maze since John Murdy did say that he wanted to do another silent hill house. I assume we might see Art the clown in some shape of form at the event. Supposedly a titan of terror is going to be replaced though I bet on Jason since the rights have always been hard to obtain. I'm looking forward to this year if the rumors about more heavy hitting IPS are true.

Great Early Gift! Thank you IU Staff!

For what it is worth, Murdy has already dropped a few bits of information for 2025:
  • Murdy said he has completed the treatment for House #1 at USH, totaling 121 pages, with the weirdest thing he researched being "what night watchmen carried in a specific time and place."
  • He also finished the treatment for House #2, which came in at 148 pages; the strangest thing he researched was old-school teeter-totters.

Oh - as for original houses, I would love to have Graveyard Games as an Orlando Original that transferred over.

Hopefully, Universal needs to get both the Gremlims and the SCREAM houses; they're one of the few popular late-20th-century horror franchises to not receive an HHN haunted house treatment, so yeah, I would LOVE to see how both IPs are treated for HHN since they're one of my favorite franchises. I also hope FNAF will appear in 2025 since it's rumored to be cut this year due to UC engineers not having the necessary tools to build the bears' animatronics.

Gonna throw out what I call Prayer Circles (which is my own means of speculating), I have a few.

- Chainsaw Man: Chaos or Blumhouse: Behind The Screams takes over the DreamWorks Theater
Two scenarios come to this. The former--would be at least in guessing; the continued collaboration with NBCUniversal's UDX alongside Sony and it's anime arm of Crunchyroll. With Fan Fest Nights having this collaboration already in play, it would stem to reason that it might extend to HHN with a localization of Chainsaw Man: Chaos from this year's HHN in Osaka.

If not Chainsaw Man: Chaos, then Atomic Monster + Blumhouse has The Conjuring: The Last Rites, The Black Phone 2, and Five Nights at Freddy's 2 from the prospective producing groups.

Speaking of Blumhouse and Atomic Monster.

- The Horrors of Blumhouse returns with Atomic Monster lurking
2025 is a massive year with Blumhouse. The benefits of the co-ownership of both Blumhouse and Atomic Monster begins with the anticipated "The Conjuring: The Last Rites". And while I do wish that could mean we try to go for bat on it's own terms...M3GAN 2.0 releases in June, and The Black Phone 2 releases in October.

NBCUniversal/Comcast likes to promote and synergize their brands alongside that of the parks, in any way or shape as they can. With M3GAN and The Black Phone being two of their biggest horror films of the year, it would stand to reason that M3GAN's time as a haunted house is due. But with The Black Phone 2 a month into HHN, I think we will see the two films (plus M3GAN 1.0) merged into a "Mega" house. M3GAN 1.0, 2.0 and The Black Phone 2 feel ripe for HHN.

Could they try to go for 4 films and include The Conjuring? Depends on what their plan is with Warner Bros. Discovery, if they have one. That actually does bring up an interesting element though.

- Warner Bros. Discovery -feels- like a wildcard
In a case to where I think you might have to wonder on gambles, I wonder on what exactly is the plan with WBD. In the terms of the 2024 and 2025 calendar year, they have major films and programming that feels prime for HHN.

IT: Welcome to Derry has Stephen King hands off creatively and producingly, giving them a potential line in the sand to go for a loophole similar to The Shining. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice continues to smash records and rise up in the global box office, and The Conjuring: The Last Rites releases on the first week of HHN Hollywood's traditional calendar period. Prime time to wonder what exactly they could go for, if they go for one or if they go for multiple in one fell swoop.

That's not even considering the Titans, and what they could be potentially able to do with Jason now with Jason Universe into play. I'd say this is the one to keep an eye on.

- Shattering a Discography
This one's my personal dumb hope/prayer of the year, much like how Weeknd was for 2024. I have to think that with the way that NBCUniversal was able to keep Hurry Up Tomorrow from being hidden from plain sight, I think that creates an interesting paradigm that might catch the eyes of multiple major music artists.

Who I'd pick is a vast call, but as we've seen with the past 4 years; they do entice big names that can hit young demographics that would be prime for HHN.

- Metro returns to Halloween Horror Nights
With Universal Fan Fest Nights, the door has been opened once again with the Metro/Cityscape sets returning to Back to The Future. While I don't think this is a immediate lock--locations are locations--I am in the belief that we will see HHN return to the "Backlot" backlot. I think we would've done so had timing of worked out for 2024, and had SAG-AFTRA not of been settled when it did.

This would likely mean the future of H-Lot to be likely finished. Or atleast, done for the time being. As it would for a venue in the Lower Lot...though, who's to say it has to be SS12 that goes?

That be my prayer circles outside of one.

An interesting tit-for-tat on Latin American houses in Parisian (and I feel it's good in establishing it). In the terms of past conversations, I believe Park Journey had chanced to talk with Murdy in 2023. And he brought up how Parisian has basically become a location that is kind of locked to do one aspect (and that aspect is of Latin Culture) due to the adjacent Dia De Los Muertos Plaza.

I think unless if there is anything sudden, we will see Latin American culture stay in line (which is unfortunate as I'd wish for them to tackle asian mythology and culture).

Someone already mentioned this lightly but the possibility of another TLOU house is EXTREMELY likely. Specifically the videogame version of The Last of Us Part 2. Let's think about it, Druckmann and Naughty Dog are still in really good relationships. Apart from that, it's the 5th anniversary of the game next year, the second season of the show will come out and there'll be a lot of synergy with the show and the franchise itself yet again, and Druckmann himself said that if the first maze did well and fans liked it, they'd consider Part 2.

Let's keep WB out of the discussion for now. Their deal with Six Flags seems to be going strong and it seems to be one of the main reasons as to why Elm Street did get dropped this year. It narrows down options by a lot but ultimately, I hope this means that Universal finally starts tapping into their own film catalogue with IP's such as The Thing and maybe even a return of AWIL.

Another potential runner-up is Goosebumps. Yes, Disney has the rights to the franchise right now BUT Sony holds the rights to the two films they made off of the IP. Also has anyone seen that first film? The monster designs are actually PERFECT for an HHN house and the sets in there would also just be perfect. Sony and Uni have been holding a pretty good relationship as of late with IP's like GhostBusters and even, to an extent, TLOU. Apart from that, Murdy somewhat recently did a tweet where he asked fans to drop down whatever IP's they would like to see at the event. One person mentioned Goosebumps, but in particular, the books and the old TV show. Murdy simply replied with "The films are fun too. Watched them with my daughters". Maybe I'm looking too deep into it but with next year also being the 10th anniversary of the first film and Goosebumps having a decent interest from the GP, a maze based off the film(s) would be great.

Monstruos 3 is a no-brainer. If they don't finish the trilogy, it would just feel weird and Murdy said that the 'Pueblo Del Terror' scarezone was basically the test for the two houses we've had and they still have a couple of leftover monsters. Chupacabra is the biggest outlier. So many monsters in these houses and we have yet to see him? Apart from that, Mictlantecutli, Cegua, Sombreron, and so many other Latin American Monsters are yet to be tapped into. And with how praised these last two mazes have been, come on, it's going to happen.

Let's get to slashers now. There's always at least one slasher at the event every year and while there are rumors of Titans of Terror making a return, I feel like we're at the point where WB just wouldn't let that happen again. I hope I'm proven wrong though because I would love to see the house return since I foolishly skipped out on it in 2017 in favor of Blumhouse. But, and I know you're all going to hate this, Michael hasn't been at the event since 2022 and for Uni, this is around the time they'd bring him back around. As for which film? I'd personally love to see Halloween 2 from 2016 make a return but bringing back the lost Halloween 3 maze from 2020/2021 would also be incredible.

As for UCM, I feel like one of two things will happen, 1: Eternal Bloodlines was our very last UCM maze and we don't see the IP return for a loooong time. Or 2: we get one final maze, in the sense of 2018's maze, with all the monsters in there for a good send-off. Slash's vinyl record seals the deal. It truly feels like they made it as an homage to all the years we've had the IP at the event and it's a way of the Monsters saying goodbye to us. Apart from that, Uni no longer wants to spend money on those mazes, basically giving them the final scraps every year after 2021.

Horrors of Blumhouse Chapter 4 would be a no-brainer. I don't want to see it but Blumhouse surely would. The GP has really shown a lot of love to the Blumhouse name at the event these past couple of years and with films such as M3GAN 2.0 and The Black Phone 2 coming out next year, why wouldn't they spin it back around? Easy money, easy marketability, and easy synergy between the maze and the new films.

The possibility of us getting another Orlando original is definitely high. As for which one it would be, at this point, would be anything. Graveyard Games, Nightingales, Yeti, hell, eeven Slaughter Sinema. But I have a feeling that with an event like Hollywood specifically and with how the last couple of mazes with Orlando concepts (Scarecrows and zombies) have been pretty basic on what the monsters inside hold in store for the guests, a Dollhouse factory maze of some sort would work with the Hollywood demographic. It sort of feels like Toyz and Cucuy's lair in Monstruos this year was a test for that but I guess time will tell.

I'm seeing a lot of lite-horror properties and I'm going to be an old head and personally just loudly scream No, No, NO! Ghostbusters was enough! I want actual fear again at the event, nothing watered down!

I also think saying the WB deal with Six Flags being strong is a not really rooted in reality as much as the general public would like to think. Uni and WB still have a great relationship, and after all, money talks.

Whether Universal Monsters returns for another entry is a coin flip. Universal the organization has a vested interest in keeping the brand alive and current, so they may push for one.

I don't see Metro returning.

Blumhouse Volume 4 or whatever seems like a real possibility given the timing of M3GAN 2 and Black Phone 2, as Alex pointed out.

Goosebumps is not happening.

I'm unclear on where things stand with using Jason Voorhees. Maybe they can do a Titans house that switches him for Michael.

I do think after the breakout success of Terrifier 3, we'll see a (mildly sanitized) take on the franchise.

Monstruous is another coin flip but still feels more likely than not. Depends on if Murdy can find monsters with accompanying environments that inspire him. There's inertia behind Monstruous thanks to the accompanying Day of the Dead festival area that's become an event stalwart these last few years -- management will want to reuse whatever they can, so Murdy compromising there to get funds for other things feels right.

Honestly too soon to say re: video games. I think anime stays with Fan Fest for now.

STRONG CHANCES:
M3GAN - The Terror Tram bits and part 2 coming out next year tell me this will undoubtedly be involved in some fashion in 2025. Universal has a new horror icon and they're going to want to use it to death.

The Black Phone 2 - Another new Universal icon. My bet is we see this and M3GAN for a Blumhouse of Horrors maze.

Nightmare on Elm Street - It's been a long time since we've had Freddy back. And it'd be nice to get a talking mouth piece as an icon for commercials and advertising. A needed popular IP that can really bring it. Speaking of which...

Beetlejuice - The movie was huge and while we did something apparently VERY wrong in 2021, I can't help but think HHN is scrambling right now to find something -- ANYTHING -- that will bring crowds back. I think they're going to do whatever they can to rectify the past and get them to play ball.

The Last of Us 2 - With the new season coming out, there will definitely be a need to get something this big again. I think this will be the reason we don't see Silent Hill or any other video game adaptation next year.

Smile - They advertised a bit at HHN this last year. It's a no brainer, big IP and has all the potential in the world to be a great maze.

MEDIUM CHANCES:
Five Nights at Freddy's - There's a lot of issues with making this work and I think Killer Klownz is the only example of giant costumes being successful at HHN so far. I have no doubt it'll be represented in some way at the event, I just don't know for sure if it'll be a maze. If fans are lucky (personally I don't care for the IP), it may get a section in a Blumhouse of Horrors maze.

I Know What You Did Last Summer - Requel comes out next year and the first one has ofcourse become a slasher 90s classic. But is it big enough and will Sony play ball with Universal to give them an early look to finish a maze in time for HHN (the movie comes out in July)?

Thread (the Insidious spin off): Are HHN fans burnt out on Insidious? Maybe, but I'm not sure how much of a spin off this is or if it's still very much in line with the Insidious world. I think depending on how different the take is, the more likely we will see it, but the more similar, it may be good idea to stay away.

Universal Monsters Sequel & Monstrous 3 & Orlando Original Port Over: I think with the low lines for all of these, HHN will have to start thinking a bit outside of the box for its original content.

Terrifier - I hate this series, but the franchise went mainsteam this year, beating out HUGE potential blockbusters. Problematic content aside, it's now a fairly viable IP that will get some people excited if it came to the event.

LOW CHANCES:
Scream - Every year I talk about it and every year I get excited. However, for 2025, there's admittedly very little reason to do a Scream maze with 2026 having part 7 coming out and also being the 30th anniversary of the first film. 2026 is the year, if there ever was any, but this year won't be it.

Wolf Man - That Terror Tram debacle really hit them out of nowhere. With the movie coming out early 2025, they'd have to be assured for it to be a hit to start prep on a maze on it. As of now, the risk is too high of the same backlash happening in cinemas.

Saw & Conjuring - Both have movies coming out next year but both seem to be content with their current partnership with Six Flags. I don't care much about not having Saw, but no Conjuring is a huge IP loss for HHN.

You know, I wouldn't mind if Murdy had a shot at Poltergeist again with an actual budget.

Lot of good stuff here. Don't agree on everything, but there's some really solid arguments. Definitely want to emphasize that no one should be expecting to see Wolf Man next year. The meet and greet fiasco burned some bridges.

Completely agree, but on the basis of pure copium, the fact Naughty Dog is a Sony studio and Silent Hill is (at the moment) a Plastation/ PC exclusive and under Konami (who are dying for a Silent Hill renaissance), maybe the two can coexist.

Again, it's just copium, and I full also expect The Last of Us to be here again. Just would be nice to have a second course with that meal!

I think Monstruos is the guaranteed--in part as back in September, Murdy actually did a ring to ask those in the community of latin american legends they haven't done as of yet.

Perhaps it's me, but I think with the permament locations of Dark Universe in Orlando, and of Horror Unleashed in Vegas (and that it should be open by HHN time), I wonder if there could be a concern/fear of cannibalization or audiences confusing a HHN house with a Theme Park level addition.
