I wonder what the odds are for Terrifier this year. You have the creator wanting to do the house, the last one just broke into the mainstream, and then Aiello wanting to do it.

Or hear me out, you wait out a year and do it for HHN35 in Orlando and HHN20 in Hollywood (Which technichally is in 2026) and do it when Terrifier 4 should be out by.

why, though? I understand the potential synergy for the next movie, but I don't think that's enough of a reason for them to avoid striking while the iron is hot-ish.

Or... crazy idea... hear me out, the synergy isn't needed for Terrifier 4. Your hypothetical scenario also relies heavily on Terrifier 4 actually coming out in 2026, while possible, might not happen and you're just assuming. I rather get it next year and then if it works out we get a house based on Terrifier 4 in the future after that movie releases.

Beetlejuice - The movie was huge and while we did something apparently VERY wrong in 2021, I can't help but think HHN is scrambling right now to find something -- ANYTHING -- that will bring crowds back. I think they're going to do whatever they can to rectify the past and get them to play ball.

Hollywood didn't necessarily do anything wrong. To renew the licensing for the 2021 season, the house needed to be open for the 2020 season. Which is why it was open for a couple of days in Orlando.

The park didn't even reopen until April 2021 due to the pandemic. USH couldn't have done anything to keep the licensing, especially with Orlando conforming to Warner Bros' wishes. To put it simply, USH was a victim of circumstance.

With that, Beetlejuice is very much in play. The new film has made almost $500 million, so I'm sure both parties would be interested in a Beetlejuice haunted house.

That's probably for the best tbh. A third year in a row of a very similar concept/premise sounds lame. Retire it for a while and bring it back as a final "hurrah" to the Latin American houses in Parisian.

Wasn't there an issue with merchandise being seen before the contract was finalized? I thought that was part of the problem and WB pulled the plug. Either way, that excuse never made sense to me lol but whatever the case may be, I'm putting high bets on Beetlejuice happening.

doesn't universal have the rights to army of darkness?
along with some other movies they don't use

Army of Darkness is a Universal release, but the rights are more complicated than you'd expect. Usually, if they aren't using a movie that feels like a slam dunk, there's an underlying, non-obvious reason.

I think when people see Universal has “rights” to something, they assume it means they have rights to do literally whatever they want with that property, when really the rights extend to theatrical distribution and that’s pretty much it. That was especially the case back when Army of Darkness came out.

Even when Universal has "complete rights" (for lack of a better term) - they still don't have free reign.

EX. Jurassic Park or Jaws coming as a Haunt

Another great example is the UCM, for even with the recent string of houses and everything else they've done with them, HHN still has to get permission to use them.

Personally, I choose to believe that clearance issues is the only reason why we haven't had my beloved SHOCKER at the event.

One thing I found helpful for speculating about Hollywood in particular was to think of what “role” at the event various houses have played. Just using the past two years as an example, potential categories include:

Classic Slasher: Chucky Ultimate Kill Count / Texas Chainsaw Massacre The Legacy of Leatherface
Family Friendly IP: Stranger Things 4 / Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire
Post-Apocalyptic: The Last of Us / A Quiet Place
Universal Monsters: Monsters Unmasked / Eternal Bloodlines
Supernatural Horror: The Exorcist Believer / Insidious The Further
Zombies/Undead: Evil Dead Rise / Dead Exposure Death Valley
Latin American Original: Monstruous / Monstruous 2
Quirky Wild Card: Holidayz in Hell / The Weeknd Nightmare Trilogy

I personally think there is good reason to expect that they may not do Universal Monsters again this year, given the opening of Epic Universe and Universal Horror Unleashed (and, to a lesser extent, the reaction to Eternal Bloodlines). Would love to have a Creature from the Black Lagoon house, don’t get me wrong, but I’m going to guess that this year, anyway, the Universal Monster IP slot will be replaced by Blumhouse (which is rapidly becoming equivalent to Universal’s second in-house IP).

With all that said, some predictions, most of which are recycled from people who have commented and are savvier than me:

Classic Slasher: Friday the 13th. Feels like Jason is overdue, and like everyone is saying, there is a push to market Jason with the Jason Universe, etc. Terrifier is a possibility given that the franchise is much more mainstream after the success of Terrifier 3, but Jason feels more broadly popular than Art, and easier to pull off without tons of gore and controversy, so I’d bet on Jason. (As a slasher fan, if we got both, awesome).

Family Friendly IP: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice is hot again after the success of the sequel, and it feels like it could really fulfill the same zany fun as Ghostbusters. I think people are on to something. Possibility of getting Stranger Things 5, though the season four house came one year after the season was released, so I think more likely we get that down the road. (I think Netflix would pick Universal over Six Flags if they had the choice.)

Post-Apocalyptic: The Last of Us 2. I am sold on people suggesting that—seems like Universal and Naughty Dog had a strong first collaboration, the first house was very popular, etc. Feels like an easy win for Universal.

Universal Monsters/Blumhouse: The Horrors of Blumhouse with M3GAN and The Black Phone. Both are getting sequels, M3GAN and the Grabber are the most popular of the Blumhouse characters (more for sure, I’d say, than Babyface from Happy Death Day or the Butcher from Freaky, notwithstanding my fondness for Happy Death Day), etc.

Supernatural Horror: Silent Hill. The past two years have had pretty big IPs in this slot. If Beetlejuice, Jason, and Last of Us all make an appearance, there may be less need for as much of a household name. I personally think it is not super likely to get two video game houses, but there is some reason to think Silent Hill is possible, and it’s a bit of a wish pick—I remember hoping the no talking icon on spec maps was Silent Hill rather than A Quiet Place.

Zombies/Undead: I would guess another original like Dead Exposure: Death Valley (perhaps a reimagined version of an Orlando house again?), or it could be a wild card pick like Zombieland, etc.

Latin American Original: Monstruous 3 seems the likeliest. I personally loved both Monstruous and Monstruous 2—I’d be here for it.

Quirky Wild Card: A west coast version of Slaughter Sinema and Scary Tales both seem like really good guesses.

In terms of shows, I think The Purge: Dangerous Waters will probably be back (at risk of becoming the love it/hate it Nightmare Fuel of the west coast). For the other, maybe Universal Monsters will get a showing in the Dreamworks theater.

Krampus would be a fun property to revisit.

- Fills the Cult IP slot. Also fills the Comedy IP slot to a lesser extent.
- Christmas theme, which is rare.
- Relatively easy to acquire.
- A great way to reuse props/elements from Frozen Empire.
- Recent advancements in puppetry/animatronics could make it a step up from 2016.

It would be better served as a Hollywood exclusive, but I wouldn't mind seeing it return to Orlando.

I wouldn’t mind seeing it just in Orlando. Never got the hype for that IP/ house…
