Disney makes 'Tinker Bell' change clothes

Costumes resembling characters forbidden at Walt Disney World

Author: Mike DeForest, Reporter, mdeforest@clickorlando.com

WALT DISNEY WORLD, Fla. - April Spielman wanted her boyfriend's first trip to Walt Disney World to be memorable, so she planned to do something special -- dress up like Tinker Bell.

"My makeup took two hours, my hair took another hour, and then I had to spray my body in glitter and paint my nails," said Spielman, 15, who had purchased a Tinker Bell costume online.

Spielman said she and her boyfriend, who was dressed as Peter Pan, had no problem getting into Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park on Sunday. But when they tried to visit Disney's Animal Kingdom later, Spielman said security officers stopped them at the front gate.

"They said I looked too good," said Spielman, referring to how closely her costume resembled Disney's official Tinker Bell theme park character who poses for photographs with visitors and signs autographs.

Disney officials told Spielman she had to change clothes in order to visit the theme park.

"It just broke my heart," said Spielman as tears rolled down her face. "I didn't want to take off the costume.

Walt Disney World's dress code for visitors, which is published on the resort's website, states "adult costumes or clothing that can be viewed as representative of an actual Disney character" is inappropriate theme park attire that "may result in refusal of admittance."

According to Spielman, Disney officials explained that children might confuse her for the theme park's official Tinker Bell character.

"They were talking how the little girls, it ruins their dreams," said the 15-year-old. "But it ruined my dreams because I just want to be Tinker Bell."

Disney park officials gave Spielman a free shirt and other clothing to wear instead of her costume. The company also provided her family with numerous FastPass tickets, which enabled them to skip the lines on rides they missed while the teenager was changing clothes.

Walt Disney World spokeswoman Kathleen Prihoda issued a statement on Tuesday:

"The guests were asked to change because costumes that could be viewed as representative of an actual Disney character are not appropriate attire for our theme parks. The costumes were disruptive to our operation and possibly confusing to our other guests, as children were asking to take photos with them. To make up for any inconvenience, we provided them with replacement clothing and assisted them with the rest of their visit in our parks."

Disney sells children's costumes inside the theme parks and offers princess and pirate makeovers to younger visitors who would not be mistaken for official Disney theme park characters.

Agreed. I thought Disney was very kind to give her the free stuff.

Yeah. They tried, but you can't portray Disney as a bad guy here.

^ I agree. That was pretty classy of the park management to attempt to make up for something that wasn't their mistake. She must have been sincerely distraught.

We were headed to pop century from downtown disney one night and a maintenance truck slammed right into the side of where we were sitting inside the disney bus. We had glass in our hair and it was all over our clothes from the shattered window, not to mention the situation. They didn't even offer us a mickey sticker!

I tried to get into the Magic Kingdom dressed like Mr. Hanky once. I was told I looked too much like a WDW manager (take your pick here). My dreams were ruined. All I wanted to do was be Mr. Hanky for 1 day. Just 1 day. I got up at 3:00 to start getting ready. And big bad Disney crushed my life dream.

***Anyone think this chick will wind up on a MTV teen reality series one day? LoL.

Ok, now that I see the video... she is a spoiled mess and her boyfriend.... her boyfriend... um... um... perhaps it is a youth thing and he would perhaps be better in a swordfight... if you get my gist.

When I heard about this story earlier, I felt for her. But now that I find that she's only 15, and she was all whiny about it, forget it. They were more than generous in their offerings to her family. As far as the regulations go, I've heard of this before, but over at Disneyland. A few friends of mine went to Disneyland dressed as Kingdom Hearts characters, and after an hour in the park, CMs asked them to leave. It is a park liablilty, because if a person dressed as these characters turns down a picture or an autograph, it could end up tarnishing Disney's image.

No offense, but.....duh? You can't wear full-on character costumes to Disney. I guess I thought that was common knowledge, because Disney doesn't want other guests mistaking costumed guests as employees.

Disney takes their characters very serious...,the amount of work and classes they have to go through to be a character is ridiculous so they want there characters to be respected. I swear some of the tourist kill me expecally after being a CP participant

I cracked up too when she was mumbling "I just want to be Tinker Bell"

She can wear that costume when she's 18 all she wants for halloween  but I also literally laughed out loud at the sad face picture at the end when the news story says "She ended her day, looking like this"

Also it shows how whiny she is for the simple fact she contacted the news media over it.

Also the reason why they let her in DHS is Tink isn't there, I think in DAK she might be, but I'm not sure.

Anyone up for an autotune remix of this? :pound:
