Ah yes, the classic "Universal Studios Escape" ad that confused everyone and is a hallmark of bad theme park advertising. Haven't seen this in years!

If it wasn't for the horrible, easily misunderstood "Universal Escapes" marketing phrase & campaign, that could have been a pretty good commercial. The Spidey/Doc Ock fight (ala the William Shatner Twilight Zone airplane episode) was actually pretty thrilling

Just like, wow. A theme park advertising campaign based on how cheap it was to get in. I could imagine a present day DHS commercial, "For the amazing price of $115 you get 5 rides, and half the park closed down". ;)

They used a clip of Steel Phantom at Kennywood for the IOA ad....Why? haha

And also, I would give anything to visit 1999-2000 Universal again...The time we're in now is so exciting, but I miss original IOA

A masterpiece of promotion. I remember seeing this in front of lots of MCA/Universal video tapes in the early 1990s. This really takes me back to the glory days.

Steel Phantom was one of the scariest, most thrilling, neck breaking coasters ever built. But it was "too" thrilling. You would feel beat up after riding it. People became afraid to ride it & ridership plummeted. But I loved it.....After a few years they did some reconfiguration and it's now "Phantom's Revenge". Still a great coaster but much smoother and physically safer.

I've never seen this one before. It's schmaltzy and saccharine, yes, but also rather sweet.

The nostalgia is strong with this one! Love the ending gag with the shark.

Being newer to this and not being able to experience the original IoA- can I ask why?

I want to like it as a Twilight Zone fan... but it just makes no damn sense.

Couple things are missing in modern IOA:
  • Port of Entry Streetmosphere. The Storyteller and others can be found in some of the promo videos.
  • Island Skipper Tours in the lagoon.
  • The Lost Continent in its original form with Merlinwood. While there is no debate the WWOHP makes IOA a better park, there was some awesome stuff lost in the upgrade. The original Dueling Dragons queue/dueling aspect stands out at the most painful loss over time. I also personally liked the Enchanted Oak Tavern.
  • Poseidon's Fury has also been altered over time.
I also would personally kill for opening day Hulk. The refurb/age has made it way too rough to enjoy multiple rides.

There was no park like IOA when it first opened...It had everything...Thrills for my coaster loving self, theme for my imagination, and, of course, Spiderman haha...

IOA didn't age very well though, there is a bit of hap-hazzardness that exists in the park right now:
Lost Continent to Hogsmede
Hogsmede to JP sticking out
Toon Lagoon is pretty irrelevant
Kong is kind of an island and kind of not

blah, blah, blah....All that to say, I think IOA's day is coming again, but gosh, when it first opened there was nothing like it on Earth...I do wish it would have gotten more attention than it did..

Yep, you nailed it, my thoughts exactly...

I would argue that HP may have saved the park, but it was plopped down rather than integrated in...Granted, they were strapped for cash at the time haha
