Also, why make this change? It's already one of the best roller coasters on the planet. Don't they have other rides that more desperately need an upgrade?

Yes. But as Ryan explained in the video, Maverick’s track may be reaching the end of its service life (much like Hulk and Nemesis) due to its age and number of cycles. *IF* they have to re-track the ride soon, reincorporating the roll would be a marketable way to squeeze some ROI out of an otherwise expensive project.

Could be possible with the higher throughput and the much quicker dispatch times, that while it's not noticable to the public eye, that there might be internal signs of stress potentially affecting the track/supports.

Not saying that it logically makes sense to do a complete retrack, but perhaps a partial retracking hitting the most affected areas would be something that might make a little bit of sense.

I do often wonder why some rides need retracking like this, and other, much older rides (Goldrusher and Viper at SFMM, Matterhorn at Disney, etc.) don't.

I get number of cycles and intensity may have something to do with it, but I'd imagine a ride built in the 70's and essentially continuously operated (thinking about Goldrusher and Viper specifically here) has never had extensive track replacement despite being 30-40+ years old.

Yeah, I wonder about this too. Would love to get the chance to talk to an engineer responsible for one of these to get a better sense of what the deal is.

The older steel coasters did get their track replaced; I just think it was done with no fanfare or by local teams. While not as bad as wooden coasters, there is still a bit of a Ship of Theseus situation going on with steel coasters.

Before Maverick opened to the public and the roll was removed I remember watching trains whip through there on test cycles. It would have been wild time at those speeds.

I'm still trying to cope with the fact that it's a nearly 20-year-old roller coaster.

Worth remembering that Matterhorn tends to go down for several months each year at this point. Half of that work is just keeping the track in usable shape.

^I rode Matterhorn in Sept, it was a rough ride, still a classic though. A functional Yeti is always a bonus at Disney, they should upcharge lol.

I reckon it would be great if they added a new element to Maverick where the death roll was briefly. I would have been game for the original roll, but I am crazy - think SCAD towers, aerobatic flying. Love Maverick, it amazes me that a 105 foot coaster is close to the best in that land of giants.

Matterhorn would have been fully retracked by now but doing so would cause them to lose some grandfathered exemptions to building codes. Updating it to current code on things like ride envelopes would essentially require the mountain to be destroyed. So band-aid after band-aid is what it gets.

This is my hang up, in order to bring it back they need to make some serious changes to the design of the roll AND the speed going into it without impacting the end of the ride pacing.

You don't have to change the speed. The forces you feel are based upon your rate of change in direction or speed. You elongate the element the forces you feel will be reduced. It's the same idea behind high speed curves, they have a larger radius to decrease the rate of change in direction, lowering the forces you feel on your body.
