There were like zero negative reviews (probably by virtue of how new/hard it is to get to USB) and I was really excited. Now there is one negative review lol

I am sure it comes down to nostalgia and love for an IP as well. I have no nostalgia for universal monsters, so I don’t think the ride will “move me” in the same way.

I finally rode ROTR for the first time last summer at Disneyland, and it’s the first ride I’ve walked off of and cried, feeling overwhelmed by the sheer scale, immersion, and nostalgia of the experience. We ended up riding it 4 times on our trip, and would have done more if we could have.

I certainly feel Monsters is really going to be epic, immersive, and exciting.

But everyone is different, which is why I don’t love “pitting” attractions against one another. Just go and enjoy, it’s not a contest

The overall tone of the ride is not what I was expecting. It is not a horror ride. It is an action/adventure ride that at times is a bit cartoony.

Hate to say it but I find this really disappointing, albeit unsurprising.

I was expecting action/adventure. It has a potentially larger target demographic. Not everyone is a hardcore HHN/Horror fan.....Probably best case scenario for large crowds attracted to the land.

If you're someone who's already on edge around these characters you're probably going to be scared on this ride in the same way someone uncomfortable with spiders goes through that scene in Forbidden Journey.

At the end of the day the ride needs to be accessible by the general public so there are going to be caveats. I would ask you ride it first before passing final judgment on it. Personally I keep reriding it the same way I keep going back to Mummy and I think that's a great sign for a good ride.

As the great Imagineer Tony Baxter often said....The real value of an attraction is what the experience is like after many multiple rides, not just the first ride. Re rideability is very important.

As Jarmor said, HHN isn't scary anymore, so I don't think that's a meaningful qualifier. But yeah, I shouldn't be surprised given that the only true horror attraction the area has had lasted eight years and closed over 20 years ago, I was just really hoping we'd get a true successor.

Just a question…..why would Universal, in its $7 billion theme park (in which 75% is geared towards families), make a land/ride that is wholly inaccessible to a lion share of its targeted demographic? If anybody’s were truly expecting this ride to be “terrifying”, our unmet expectations, and the associated disappointments, are not to be blamed on Universal…but rather, ourselves.

I will say that there are several very solid jump scares a la the spider and Dementors, but Igor’s role in the ride is to be comedic relief, which helps lighten the tone.

I think it strikes a very good balance, personally.

Yes, Van Helsing like concept is what I expected from day one. Great for me since I'm one of the few that actually enjoyed that movie. ....Plus, the original Kuka concept was supposedly for a Van Helsing ride.

I never expected the ride to be that scary since the nature of a ride doesn't lead itself to be scary like that. not like a haunted house, and the original monsters movies aren't even like terrifying or anything.

This isn't concept art. It's an officially-published visual render of the whole park, created towards the end of the park's construction, meant to be accurate to the final version of the park, so that Universal Creative can do digital flythroughs to figure out sightlines, attraction placement, guest flow, ETC. If you look back at actual concept art from 2019 or later, you will see differences (IE the cancelled Dark Universe theatre show, different building placements, ETC).

Disney does this exact same thing internally too, they just don't often publish it for marketing. We see their domed screens Imagineering uses for digital park flythroughs in Disney+'s The Imagineering Story. It's disingenuous to knock Disney and praise Universal as if they operate differently and one is somehow more competent than the other.

People forget concept art is supposed to be "concepts" of what a planned attraction could be like, and are not the final product, though I do share grievances at how some art reveals how budgets and lack of ambition can lead to worse products than promised.

I keep seeing *some* Epic fans misinformed about how the themed entertainment industry works and seemingly wilfully obtuse about themed entertainment criticism; I see a continued narrative perpetuated by people like Wallin Ballin on Twitter that somehow Epic Universe is gonna be a game-changing, world's best theme park. Don't get me wrong, Epic is gonna be *really good* and fun when it opens, but I don't see how by any conceivable metric that it's supposed to be artistically more impressive and grand in scale than legendary parks like the Efteling and Tokyo DisneySea.

Worried some fans are taking it to mythic levels. And it won’t live up to those expectations. It’s a new park, and that’s super exciting, but let’s not get too crazy.
