What was originally an Disney+ animated series, has now been reworked into a theatrical release sequel for Moana.

I KNEW IT!

EDIT: I mean come on, in this media landscape, why would you waste 200 mil on a Moana show, when you could make 1 billion on a movie.

I just hope it does well enough to push Disney to FINALLY make some sorta of Moana ride/land. The Journey of Water thing at Epcot is cool but c'monnnn. Moana deserves an e-ticket considering its one of their most popular films ever

Oh I really have no hope of it being good. This is post-Wish Disney trying to finagle what was likely a 150 minute streaming series into a 95 minute movie we just heard about, presumably without the involvement of the original screenwriters/songwriters and lots of hasty story changes to make it a worthwhile sequel.

But I love me some Moana, so screw it.

I don’t like the sound of turning something that was supposed to be a series into a theatrical release. Gives me no hope for quality.

She's a girl who loves the island and a girl who loves the sea, absolutely nothing to mess up for me.

EDIT: The songwriters are the songwriters of Bridgerton The Musical, does anyone have a read on the quality of those songs.

Possibly a signal that either Tiana or Win or Lose are getting reconfigured as theatrical projects as well.

That synopsis reminds me of all the terrible Disney animated sequels of the early 2000’s, unfortunately.

I had zero idea this was happening, but I’m here for it! First film was fun, I expect same here. Not super worried tbh

I hope the film has a real villain the twist villain....was to me so lame

Like a cool design but....not what I want in these films....give us fun cool villains like in the 90s.

I think if Disney is financially desperate enough to dramatically reconfigure a streaming series this late in the game for theatrical, then it might be likely that one of the Marvel shows gets 'upgraded' as well.

Yeah, this has big "make it a feature and it has to be out in a year" energy. It's not conducive to good storytelling and will probably end up being as incoherent and disappointing as Frozen II. But, then, that film made a billion dollars, and a bunch of people convinced themselves it was good and made perfect sense, so...

Even accounting for how popular the original is on streaming, opening the jerry-rigged TV spinoff against Wicked still seems like imperial hubris.

I cried like a baby during that movie, but I also thought I was going to die in like three months, so like tomato, tomahto.

Disney might be daring Universal to move it.

They dared Trolls Band Together to move too and that movie nearly doubled Wish at the domestic BO. I don't think Disney is in the stronger position here.

EDIT: one thing in Disney's favor here: it was animated in Vancouver and originally made for streaming, so it's almost certainly cheaper than the 200m they've been routinely spending on their animated projects. That might give them some legroom on this one.

I agree. It's pretty much the perfect fit for Animal Kingdom and one of few Disney IPs that actually fits the park

So this originally was supposed to be a Disney+ series, but now it's being converted into a movie.

And no songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda.

As much as I like the original, this just doesn't instill confidence.
