There are some pretty interesting details about a particular patent that Universal just secured for a boat ride system….just saw a breakdown on Themepahk on youtube

Watching that video I got the impression they could do a boat ride with no visible track, or rails like traditional boat ride that could allow guest to travel across much larger bodies of water.
