Universal Shuts Down Half of Theme Park, Guests Removed Immediately

Halloween Horror Nights had a major shut down last night after multiple houses closed down half of the theme park.
insidethemagic.net insidethemagic.net

This seems to be happening more frequently. Apparently half of the houses shut down due to reaching capacity. Everyone’s experience was forcibly cut in half while paying full price.

This really sucks for the general guests. Overcrowding is getting wildly out of control this year and this is simply out of pure greed. Sadly it looks like USH is isnt going to give a rats rear and will double down on overselling because it’s making them much money.

I also realized that we are probably seeing a lot more teenagers this year die to Knott’s chaperone policy.

To be fair, the Knott's chaperone policy is also a big reason as to why last year's HHN was massively attended.. that and the popularity of The Weeknd..

And backlash from Knotts bag policy was a reason Knotts crowds were generally light last year and HHN was packed.

Maybe that's true, but that doesn't seem to matter to the general public, right? Like it obviously matters, but even I, a super nerd who critiques every piece of these events, doesn't care about the bag policy. I don't see that driving a ton of people to competition alone and seems to be just a cop out rather than having any actual evidence

I agree that as a multi-night goer I don’t really care about the bag policy, but as a dude I tend to stuff everything in my pockets  But there’s a lot of “GP” that just brings bags and have to bring a backpack.

Yeah it’s not about us guys. There are numerous females I know who don’t want to bother attending Knotts with a bag policy like that. I’ve seen the same at Dodger games. It’s not a cop out. Last year Guest Relations said there were a lot of refunds given to people who decided not to attend due to the policy, which is another reason it was more clearly stated as the event went.

Also, if that ITM article was about the lower lot closing on Thursday night there was an unfortunate reason for that that was beyond Universal’s control and it has nothing to do with capacity… if it was for Friday then that’s just bad. I can’t tell exactly what day they were referring to.

This wasn’t an overcrowding issue it was an injury, apparently serious enough to shut down lower lot.

Also there’s different rules, if you show up to the park early you don’t have to abide by HHN dress code/ rules since they don’t start enforcing that till later. Example: water bottles aren’t allowed into HHN but are allowed in universal

Sorry to maybe reiterate, but while I understand the bag thing might be difficult, I don't think the general guest, female or male, is like "man I want to do Scary farm. I can't bring a bag? Oh, okay, now I will spend a different amount of money to go to a different part of California where the offerings, vibe, and overall experience is different." Like, maybe some people, but most people would just be like "farfanoogin, alright ill just buy a clear bag or make my boyfriend wear cargo shorts." I'm not trying to be dismissive if this was really so substantial, but like i don't think it's the giant factor yall are making it out to be at all

The 3 Houses shutting down...is a joke to me

I love the content of this year but the Ops....is a joke to me. Shouldn't be legal to be letting this many people in if they can't do everything.

Good for people coming but I'd love to talk to people who don't have express and understand how they think they got any value or really had that much fun standing in line all night

Honestly, why can't we change Early Entry to the Curious George mazes? I feel like bottling everyone up in the lower lot is just a recipe for disaster, especially because there's rides down there. With the lines having high wait times, people feel the need to go there first scared they'll just get higher. Or they think they can do rides to wait it out. Or they just figure, hey a lot of stuff in one spot, let's just knock them out. Game plan-wise, there's a small percentage who intentionally start down there.

Pushing it to Curious George can crowd up Hogsmeade a bit more instead. Reroute the traffic. While I understand it's great for us who want to get 3-4 done in the first hour and a half, it's hell for everyone else and I feel like it would evenly disperse people better. With it being a free-for-all on the lower lot, it gives a fighting chance to hit 3-4 mazes between 7-8pm because their lines will be lower. Sounds like a win for everyone.

Especially with Early Access as a ticket, we can limit how many people start in Curious George. It makes no sense for things to get so insane. This has never been a problem before.

Maybe I'm missing something with the current tickets being sold and Last of Us most days having the line have to close during EE. Why would moving the event to a place with only two houses help?

If the lower lot with 4 mazes and 3 rides, plus people lining up for SNW can't handle all the people no idea how Potter area and two houses would improve much,

The issues is too many tickets are being sold, EE has enough people to open more houses but that's the issue is how many people are being let in and not enough things to do to make it where lines are fair.

Because Lower Lot is a dead end and people feel they need to spend more time down there.

Think back to when Early Entry was the actual backlot. People came and left. That's what I'm saying will happen with Curious George. Lower Lot, there's nowhere else to go, so it balloons up everything. Disperse the people and have them trickle in, it creates less of a bottleneck.

If you start people an hour and a half early on the lower lot, and if 50% of guests are going to lower lot because there's already lines, ofcourse it's going to cause problems.

But reroute people and start them elsewhere, lower lot is freed up for at least 7-8pm like it used to be. People will see the long lines of Chucky and Unmasked and gravitate that way to get it over with. Some people will see the low lines of Evil Dead and Monstrous and go that way. A huge percentage will go to the lower lot because they're fans and know the drill.

But if you just SHOVE everyone down there to begin with, where everyone wants to start anyway, then yes, it will be crowded. This way forces everyone to start somewhere else first.

Lower Lot was always an issue from 8pm-10pm, but for it to be an issue starting at 7pm is a cause of the system as a whole, not of the people. Although I do agree there are way too many people this year, there are ways to alleviate the issue by creating a new crowd flow.

Ah, that’s my bad. I think my original post was misinterpreted. I did not mean to imply that that drove up HHN attendance. I meant more that that was a reason Knotts figures were lower (poor word of mouth for security and ops) and had to give more refunds than they usually do while HHN was still packed since they didn’t have any backlash against policies.

But I think that wraps up this topic lol back to HHN

I would not be against them trying it but I think with how many Early passes they are selling, I think all your doing moving it to the Chucky area is making that area a mess instead of the lower lot.

If they opened all 4 houses on the upper lot at 5:30 PM, then maybe it could work but two houses are not enough for the tickets being sold. I thought it would be not that many like SNW but it's insane that both Last of Us and Stranger things are packed within mins, feels like easily over 5,000 guests get in early

I just read in another thread on a trip report that Early Access now includes NintendoWorld as of the weekend of the 18th. Is this true? If so, seems to have missed that here and would be pretty big news.

is it included or is it just available in the 30 minutes the park remains open after early access begins?

I wish I knew more, but if I were to guess, the little bit of time the daytime park is open. I believe it was @Brian G. who mentioned it.

This happens frequently, operations smooth out. Also, the event is just starting, so wouldn't be the "last" weekends haha

I don't know when it starts to become available but I do know access is now granted. I know they were trying to maintain capacity inside SNW but it seems it's a ghost town during the event, so they're slowly adding access to more.
